Six unbeatens lead Boyceville wrestling to wins at Cumberland Duals

CUMBERLAND — A bevy of impressive individual performances headlined the Boyceville wrestling team’s season-opening matches at the Island City Duals in Cumberland December 1.

A half dozen Bulldog grapplers finished the dual meet tournament with unblemished records to help Boyceville finish with a 3-1 mark last Friday evening despite having to forfeit at 126 pounds throughout the tournament.

Returning state champions Garrett Joles and Brock Schlough and state place winners Justin Malean and Noah Novotney all finished the day 4-0. It was an impressive feat also equalled by freshmen Walker Retz and Trett Joles,  who went unbeaten in their very first varsity matches.

The six unbeatens combined for 14 pins, a technical fall and four major decision in the 24 matches they wrestle to help Boyceville beat River Falls 43-33, Hayward 59-21 and  host Cumberland 53-24 in the fourth and final round of duals. The Bulldogs lone loss came in the second round where Baldwin-Woodville prevailed for a 44-34 win over Boyceville.

“I was happy with the overall performance of the team,” stated veteran Bulldogs’ head coach Jamie Olson of his team’s effort in Cumberland.

“We were winning in two matches against Baldwin and got pinned in both,” noted Olson. “Those are early season mistakes that we will work on and correct going forward. That was a very disappointing loss, but our kids bounced back and wrestled tough after that.”

As expected, Boyceville’s quartet of state place winners dominated their matches in Cumberland.

“Noah Novotney, Garrett Joles, Justin Malean and Brock Schlough were fun to watch all four going undefeated,” Olson stated.

Senior Noah Novotney and junior Brock Schlough each registered three pins at 285 and 160 pounds respectively.

Senior Garrett Joles, who wrestled a pair of matches at 195 and 220 pounds each, registered two falls, a technical fall and a major decision.

Justin Malean, the Bulldogs’ 170-pounder, came through with a pair of major decision among his four victories.

“These four have been outstanding leaders in the room and that makes my job a lot easier when you have goal oriented kids that can lead in the practice room,” said Olson.

Not surprising, Boyceville’s crop of talented freshmen shined in their high school and varsity debuts.

“I was really impressed with the five freshman that started for us,” stated the coach.

“Trett Joles and Walker Retz were dominate in their varsity debuts. Nathan Stuart also wrestled really well going 2-2 losing two hard fought matches against two tough kids. Taylor Schmid and Nick Litomsky did some really good things against tough competition,” Olson noted

Trett Joles, the younger sibling of Garrett, picked up a pair of pins in his four wins at 182 pounds as did Walker Retz at 113.

Nathan Stuart also recorded pins in both of his wins  at 132 pounds.

Junior Eli Swanson wrestled extremely well at 106, taking home three wins in four matches including two by fall.

“Eli Swanson at 106 was outstanding, he has been one of our hardest working kids and his efforts showed,” Olson stated.

Nick Goodell finished 2-2 at 138 and Jason Swanepoel was 1-3 at 152.

Foreign exchange student Arthur Bia competed at 120 pounds and did well according to Olson despite going 0-4.

Boyceville will travel to Clear Lake Thursday for a dual before heading to the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells to compete in the annual Dells Duals on Saturday.
