Seven area wrestlers are named to Crossface All-State Academic teams

The Wisconsin Crossface Wrestling magazine has named seven area wrestlers – six from Boyceville and one from Glenwood City – to its 2017 All-State Academic teams.

[emember_protected] Last month, The Crossface released its all-state academic teams for the 9-10 grades and 11-12 grades for the past season and making the list were Boyceville seniors James Palmer and Micadin Kahl, juniors Jason Swanepoel and Garrett Joles and sophomores Brock Schlough and Eli Swanson along with Glenwood City junior Jacob Nadeau.

It was the third consecutive year that Joles, Palmer and Swanepoel have earned selection to the All-State Academic wrestling teams and second straight for Schlough.

Palmer, who competed in his fourth consecutive WIAA State Wrestling tournament this past February and won the Division 3, 182-pound state championship, earned a spot on the first team in the 11-12 grades category. Palmer, a recent graduate of Boyceville High School, finished last season with a record of 44-1 and that state title. Palmer held a 3.9 GPA.

Garrett Joles was tabbed for his third straight first-team honors this year in 11-12 grade division after he captured the Division 3, 195-pound state title in the 2017 WIAA State Championships. Joles, who like Palmer has a 3.9 GPA, capped his junior season with a 44-1 record and his first state title after second-place finishes at the two previous state tournaments.

Palmer and Joles finished tied for third in the final first team standing in the 11-12 grade category with 494 point each. Two other state titlists finished ahead of them – Peyton Mocco of West Allis Nathan Hale and Helton Vendenbush of Random Lake.

Teammate and two-time state champion Brock Schlough joined Palmer and Joles on this year’s first team after he completed his sophomore campaign with a 44-1 mark and the 160-pound, Division 3 state championship in Madison this past February. This was Schlough’s second straight selection to the first team in the 9-10 grade category where he tied for second with Weyauwega-Fremont’s Cian Fischer after each totaled 474 points. Schlough, who holds a 3.7 GPA, won the D3, 138-pound crown in 2016.

Glenwood City junior Jacob Nadeau earned a spot on the 11-12 grade’s second team after scoring 438 points. Nadeau is a two-time state qualifer and finished fourth in this past season’s D3, 120-pound state tournament bracket. 37-10 in his third varsity season, Nadeau has a 3.71 GPA.

For the second time in three years, the Bulldogs Jason Swanepoel was tabbed for the third team squad in the 11-12 grade with a 3.95 GPA after finishing as honorable mention a year ago.

Boyceville sophomore Eli Swanson made the third team in the 9-10 grade category with a 3.6 GPA and overall season record of 12-22. Teammate and senior Micadin Kahl, in his first year of wrestling, made the 11-12 grade honorable mention listing with a 11-10 mark and 3.4 GPA.

Criteria for all-state academic selection include a wrestler’s overall grade point average (GPA), 2014-15 varsity wins, and placement at state. The GPA is multiplied by 100 and then added to the number of varsity wins in the season and state tournament placement points (60 for first, 50 for second, 40 for third, etc.) for a final point total. The top point-getters are awarded first-team designation, followed by second team, then third team and honorable mention.

The awards are broken into a pair of categories – one for wrestlers in the ninth and tenth grades and the other for 11th and 12th grades.
