ELMWOOD — Boyceville’s head boys’ basketball coach Ben Luer would not call the Bulldogs’ 2016-17 season a loss.
The Bulldogs started out the season looking tentative, at best, on offense and defense. They ended the season by forcing bigger, faster, more experienced teams to change tactics to get around them. It was quite a learning curve, and Luer said he was pleased with how his team was playing at the end of the season compared to the start.
Still, it was not enough, as the Bulldogs succumbed to a Wolf attack when it traveled to take on the Elmwood/Plum City squad in the first round of WIAA Division 4 regional play with a 78-61 loss. They were 17 for 35 for field goals, seven for 22 on three-pointers, and six for 15 from the line.
Boyceville trailed by only five points at halftime, but scored only 30 points in the second half, while the Wolves stalked another 42 points. Bryce Boda earned the game’s biggest individual score with 22 points, and his classmate Luke Knudtson clocked in with another 17 to account for nearly two-thirds of the Bulldogs’ final score.
Cooper Boesl put together eight points, defensive anchor Jayson Gonzales earned seven, senior Kiel Anderson ended his season by picking up five points, and Jaden Reismer logged two.
Elmwood/Plum City’s Luke Baier led the Wolves’ offense with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolves
Luer and the Bulldogs will say good bye to their lone senior player, Anderson, now that the season is over. The Boyceville coach has said repeatedly throughout the season that he is looking forward to the 2017-2018 season with his five returning starters.
