Bulldogs boys close out regular season with loss at Durand

By Cara L. Dempski

DURAND — It may not have been a winning season, but Boyceville’s head boys’ basketball coach Ben Luer said he is pleased with his team nonetheless.

“I’m proud of the guys for battling until the end of the season,” the coach stated.

The Bulldogs headed to Durand for their second meeting of the season with the Panthers. The team returned home with a 52-46 loss, but Luer said the Boyceville squad played a much better defensive game than their first clash with Durand earlier this season.

Boyceville took a 10-point lead into the halftime break with a score of 33-23, but the Panthers rallied in the second 18 minutes, outscoring the Bulldogs by more than two-to-one to pull off the win.

The Dogs fought to find scoring options in the second half, and set themselves up for a win, but just could not get their shots to fall in the latter half. Luer said the team’s confidence is something he can definitely build on next season.

Luke Knudtson and Bryce Boda were the only two Bulldog players to score in the game. Boda racked up 26 points with 10 field goals and a pair of threes, while Knudtson hit an even four shots in both field goals and three-pointers.

Reid Hansen earned Durand’s top score with 14 points.

The Bulldogs wound up eighth in the Dunn-St. Croix with a record of 2-12 and are currently 5-17 overall. Boyceville, seeded 10 in the WIAA Division 4 boys tournament played in Elmwood last night, February 28, against the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves in a first-round regional contest. The winner will take on Dunn-St. Croix runner-up and number two seed Spring Valley in the regional semifinal on Friday, March 3.
