Is there a sure way to the well-being of one’s soul? The Bible assures us there is.
It is not found in the world about us or even in our own wisdom or effort. It is not even found in a system of religion. It especially is not found in the accumulation of riches, though it is not wrong to attain wealth when it is used for God’s glory. The problem is when riches become an end in themselves. The wisdom of Solomon is instructive here, “He that trusteth in riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch” (Prov. 11:28). The way to the well-being of one’s soul is found in one’s relationship to the Person of Jesus Christ. When Christ becomes one’s Savior, He also becomes one’s life with something of the desires of God Himself. It is the living out one’s life in the righteousness of God that brings genuine well-being to one’s soul. God Himself is the Source of all that is good. When we seek His goodness and righteousness, the result begins to be genuine contentment and well-being. It is thus that King David prayed, “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him” (Psa. 62:5).
