Two St. Croix county residents dead after bizarre weekend incidents

HUDSON — A Hudson woman and her 28-year-old son from Glenwood City are both dead after a chain of incidents spanning three counties and two states this past weekend.

Several St. Croix County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home of Darrell and Charlene Wold in the Town of Hudson at approximately 11:34 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017. The report was of a violent domestic dispute where 28-year-old Logan Reese of Glenwood City stabbed one family member and beat a 17-year-old family member with a stick.

When law enforcement arrived, Darrell Wold and Reese’s unidentified family member were sheltering in the garage, while 49-year-old Charlene Wold was still inside the home with Reese, who was reportedly still armed.

Deputies made entry to the home and located Charlene, who was suffering from stab wounds. She was removed from the residence and taken to a waiting ambulance, where she was pronounced dead. Officers were not able to locate Reese anywhere near the scene of the incident after an extensive search.

The officers determined Reese was driving a white Pontiac Grand Am and had likely fled the scene prior to their arrival.

At approximately 12:46 a.m. on Sunday, February 19, deputies were driving to Reese’s address in Glenwood City when St. Croix County 911 received a call from a neighbor reporting a fire in Reese’s apartment.

Residents of the apartment building were evacuated to the Glenhaven nursing care facility to await further assistance, while law enforcement and the Glenwood City and Boyceville fire departments worked at the scene of the fire. It was determined that Reese had left the building after setting fire to his apartment.

A Woodville police officer observed a car matching the description of the vehicle Reese was allegedly driving on U.S. Highway 12 at approximately 1:15 a.m. on February 19. The officer was following the suspect vehicle without his emergency lights activated while waiting for additional units to arrive, when Reese reportedly fired a weapon through his vehicle window in the direction of the following officer.

The officer immediately activated his emergency lights and engaged in a pursuit. The ensuing chase involved attempts to deflate the suspect’s tires with deflation devices, and included officers from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, Baldwin Police Department, Hammond Police Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and Chisago County Sheriff’s deputies from Minnesota. The pursuit covered over 50 miles and ended in Chisago County.

The suspect fired several shots at police vehicles during the pursuit before crashing into a median barrier on U.S. Highway 8 in Chisago County. Reese reportedly fired several more shots after crashing his vehicle before he was discovered dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after authorities approached his vehicle at 2:05 a.m.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office indicated Darrell Wold, the husband of the deceased Charlene Wold, suffered a stab wound during the incident in Hudson, and a 17-year-old family member sustained a head injury. Both were treated and released from a local hospital.

Eight apartment residents were displaced by the fire in Glenwood City, according to Glenwood City Fire Chief Greg Holden. Two of the building’s residents are currently staying in hotel rooms provided by the Red Cross, and the other six are staying with family members until further arrangements can be made.

Holden stated the building has 12 units, and the fire damage was mostly contained to Reese’s unit. There is some water and smoke damage evident in the rest of the building.

St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts said “our hearts go out to the family in this case.” He extended his gratitude to the agencies who assisted and continue to assist St. Croix County in the investigation.

Chisago County is leading the investigation of the events in Minnesota, and St. Croix County is leading the investigation for the incidents in St. Croix and Polk Counties in Wisconsin.
