Glenwood City woman sustains serious injuries in Cylon crash

CYLON TOWNSHIP — A Glenwood City woman is battling serious injuries in a Twin Cities area hospital following a two-vehicle accident that happened late Tuesday afternoon, January 31 on US Highway 63/State Highway 64 in the Town of Cylon.

Dana Jo (Hansen) DeSmith, 42, of Glenwood City suffered several injuries including a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a broken sterum and broken wrist and hand according to friend Jessica Olson of Glenwood City. DeSmith is being treated at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Paul A. Belisle, 55, of New Richmond received minor injuries. Both DeSmith and Belisle were transported to Westfields Hospital in New Richmond by New Richmond EMS. DeSmith was later transferred to Regions where she remains.

Olson said that a gofundme page has been established to help DeSmith with her medical expenses and recovery needs and that a future benefit is being planned.  

According to a report from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, the  accident occured at 4:41 p.m. on January 31 on USH 63/STH 64 just east of 240th Street in St. Croix’ Cylon Township.

The report stated that a 1998 Dodge Intrepid being driven by Belisle was westbound on USH 63/STH 64 while DeSmith was traveling eastbound in a 2002 Toyota Rav4.

Belisle lost control of his vehicle which went into a slide, crossed the centerline into the path of DeSmith and the vehicles collided. Weather conditions at the time of the accident were a factor with snow- and slush-covered roadways.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts when the crash occured. Airbags in both vehicles also deployed.  

Belisle was cited for “Failure to Keep Vehicle Under Control”.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Wisconsin State Patrol, New Richmond EMS and Medic, Deer Park Fire and First Responders and the Clear Lake Fire Department.
