Single-vehicle crash results in injuries, citations

FOREST — Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday evening, January 25 on State Highway 64 in the Town of Forest.

Jerry Kirk, 50, and his wife Cheryl Kirk, 58, both of Clayton, WI were injured when the vehicle they were in left the roadway and rolled. The accident occurred near 2920 State Highway 64 around 9:40 p.m. In St. Croix County. The Kirks were transported to Amery Medical Center for treatment by both Glenwood City Ambulances. Cheryl Kirk had to be extricated from the vehicle, a 2003 Dodge Neon, by the Glenwood City Fire Department before she could be taken to the hospital. 

When deputies from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office and emergency personnel from Glenwood City EMS and Fire Departments arrived on the scene, Mr. Kirk was standing outside while Mrs. Kirk was still trapped inside the heavily-damaged vehicle.

Jerry Kirk was the first to be transported from the scene by Glenwood City’s main ambulance to Amery for treatment. It took several minutes for Glenwood City firefighters, using rescue equipment, to free Cheryl Kirk from the wreckage who was then also taken to Amery by Glenwood City’s auxiliary ambulance.

According to information obtain from the Sheriff’s Office, the Kirks appeared to be traveling east along Highway 64, when they crossed the centerline and struck a guard rail fence. The vehicle then continued toward the ditch and driveway, striking a mail box in front of a residence before launching and rolling several times. During that time, Mr. Kirk was thrown from the vehicle while Mrs. Kirk became trapped in the car. Authorities reported that neither person was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Law enforcement officials determined that Jerry Kirk had been the driver. Mr. Kirk, who initially claimed to be the passenger, was cited with several infractions including no vehicle insurance, operating after suspension, failure to keep a vehicle under control and operating while intoxicated-4th offense.

No information on the extent and seriousness of the Kirks’ injuries was made available.

Captain Jeff Klatt with the St. Croix County Sheriff’s office said that Jerry Kirk would be making an initial court appearance on the charges at a later date. Klatt also said that the vehicle was owned and registered to a Katie Sigsworth.
