Boyceville boys’ keep Spring Valley close, but remain winless in D-SC

BOYCEVILLE — The Bulldog boys’ basketball squad is learning this season that both scoreboards and statistics books can be deceptive.

For instance, the Bulldogs lost their most recent match-up to the Dunn-St. Croix leading Spring Valley Cardinals, but Boyceville head coach Ben Luer said he saw some definite improvements in his team since the first time the two teams clashed this season. In the teams first meeting, the Bulldogs lost 73-33. In last Thursday’s contest, Boyceville lost by just nine points, 47-56.

“It was good to see how much these guys have improved defensively,” Luer said of the Bulldogs, who are still searching for their first conference win.

The Bulldogs held the Cardinals in check and stayed within nine points. Luke Knudtson led the game with an individual score of 22 points. Knudtson’s classmate, Bryce Boda, reeled in 11 points, firing in two each of field goals, three-pointers, and free throws.

Boyceville trailed 30-21 at the intermission but played Spring Valley to a draw in the second half as both teams netted 26 points. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were unable to close that first-half deficit.

Logan Knudtson continued to shoot well, taking credit for seven points with two field goals and a three-point shot. Bryce Larson put in a field goal and a three-pointer for five, and Cooper Boesl scored on a field goal for two.

Cardinal player Patrick Cipriano took top scoring honors for Spring Valley with 17 points.

The Bulldogs, now 0-8 in conference and 2-13 in all games, are slated to play their next three games at home beginning last night (January 31) against the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves. Boyceville will then host the Colfax Vikings this Friday, February 3 before wrapping up the home stand next Monday, February 6 against non-conference contestant Prairie Farm. The Bulldogs will be back on the road and in conference action in Elk Mound on February 9.
