Hilltopper girls fight hard, but drop road game to Elmwood/Plum City

PLUM CITY — The Glenwood City girls cannot seem to catch a break this season.

The Lady Hilltoppers were scheduled to meet both Durand and Elmwood/Plum City this past week, but last Tuesday’s (January 17) home match-up with Durand was postponed due to poor driving conditions and concerns for safety.

Head coach Dean Fayerweather and his team did travel to Plum City on January 19 to meet the Wolves but returned empty-handed after suffering a 47-39 loss.

“Our shots would not fall and we put ourselves in a hole,” Fayerweather said of the eight-point defeat. “We were down by seven at the half and then Elmwood/Plum City came out and scored six points in under 30 seconds to put us down by 13.”

Fayerweather gave his team credit for fighting hard, but admitted it was not enough of a fight to outscore the Wolves.

The Toppers put together 13 points in the first half, and then doubled-down on the second half to pick up another 26 points. Junior Jenesa Klinger led the team’s scoring effort with 15 points between a trio of field goals and trio of shots from outside the arc.

Mariah Voeltz logged seven points in the game with a field goal, a three-pointer, and a pair of charity shots. Sophomores Delaney Quinn and Hanna Strehlo tied with six points apiece after sinking three field goals each.

Courtney Jo Lawson contributed three points with a single outside shot, and Becca Moll dropped in a field goal for two points.

Klinger’s individual score was the game’s highest. Elmwood/Plum City player Ellie Funk drilled in nine point for the Wolves

The Lady Hilltoppers drop to 0-7 in the Dunn-St. Croix with the most recent loss, and are 1-12 for the season. Glenwood City traveled to Spring Valley for a conference contest against the Cardinals last night and will go to Grantsburg Thursday for a meeting with the Pirates before returning home the next evening to host Mondovi on January 27. The Hilltopper girls are scheduled for a home double header against Durand with the boys on Tuesday, January 31.
