Boyceville girls’ drop conference game to Durand

DURAND — The Lady Bulldogs were following the scent of another Dunn-St. Croix victory when the Durand Panthers pounced.

The Boyceville squad traveled to Durand for a showdown with the first-place and on once-beaten Panthers on January 13 but things did not go as planned and the Bulldogs lost the contest 52-36.

“Durand has a very nice team,” head coach Jolene Bird said, “but we felt we would be able to give them a challenge. We had as many turnovers as shot attempts, which was a recipe for disaster.”

Bird also said the Lady Bulldogs did not shoot well from the free throw line, making just 10 of 18 attempts, which kept their score lower than expected. She stated the team will need to get back on track in the coming week to prepare for the second half of the season.

Morgan Kuhn, who is playing her final season with the Bulldogs, led the Boyceville drive with 12 points. Her classmate, Madysn Riek picked up nine with three field goals and a trio of free throws. Cassie Malean scored eight points, Emma Harnisch took credit for three, and Rachel Prestrud and Brooklyn Hellmann each chalked up two.

Durand’s Ambree Schlosser led the game in scoring. The senior guard rolled to an 18-point finish with three field goals, two three-pointers, and six free shots.

Boyceville made just four baskets in the opening half of last Thursday’s conference contest in Durand – three field goals and a three-point shot – and three of them including the triple belonged to Kuhn. Fellow senior Cassie Malean had the other hoop.

The Panthers, who built a 31-16 halftime advantage thanks to 13 first-half points by Schlosser and 12 more from Emily Annis, held Boyceville senior post player Madysn Riek to just three free throws in the first half and nine points total.

The Bulldogs never overcame that first-half deficit as the teams battled to a near draw in the latter half with Durand edging out Boyceville 21-20 for second-half point production.

The Boyceville team was scheduled to play Mondovi on January 10, but the game was postponed until January 31 due to a winter storm. Monday night’s (January 16) non-conference game in Prairie Farm was also scratched due to impending bad weather.  Boyceville will open a three-game homestand against Spring Valley this Thursday before hosting Stanley-Boyd on Saturday in a double header with the boys team – the girls will play at 5:00 pm with the boys’ game slated for 7:00 pm. The Bulldogs will then host Colfax next Tuesday, January 24.

The team is currently 6-4 overall and has a Dunn-St. Croix record of 3-2.
