Boyceville boys lose third straight; fall to Mondovi

By Cara L. Dempski

MONDOVI — The Bulldog boys’ basketball squad cannot seem to catch a break this season, as its current losing streak continued against the Mondovi Buffaloes last Thursday in the finale of a five-game road swing that began back on December 20.

Boyceville took the long trip southeast to Mondovi on January 12 and came up on the short end of a 52-42 score. It was Boyceville’s third straight defeat and eighth in the last nine games.

Head coach Ben Luer has mentioned the Bulldogs’ youth and inexperience several times this season, and he gives the team credit for its continual improvement against some challenging teams.

The Bulldogs trailed by only two points at the halftime break with a score of 24-22 but could only manage 20 points more in the second half to end up with its final total. The Buffaloes chalked up another 28 points to win the contest by 10.

Luke Knudtson led the Boyceville boys’ team with 18 points. He put up seven field goals and made four of his five free throw attempts. Bryce Boda logged 14 points with six field goals and a pair of free throws, Cooper Boesl scored six, and Jayson Gonzalez tacked up two points.

Buffalo player Branden Becker scored 24 points against the Bulldogs to lead Mondovi’s offensive effort.

With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 0-5 in the Dunn-St. Croix and have an overall record of 2-9. The Boyceville, who will play the next six contests on the home hardwood, kicked off that long homestand against its nearest conference neighbor, Glenwood City last night (January 17). It will then host the Durand Panthers on Friday and Stanley-Boyd in a double-header with the girls on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs will play the Orioles at 5 pm with the boys taking the court at 7:00 pm.

The team will then take a five-day break before meeting Spring Valley in Boyceville next Tuesday, January 26.
