PLUM CITY — The first contest of the new year held promise for the Boyceville boys’ basketball as it held a slight one-point advantage over the homestanding Elmwood/Plum City Wolves squad in Dunn-St. Croix game played in Plum City last Friday evening.
But the Wolves outscored the Bulldogs by 11 points in the second half sending Boyceville down to defeat for the eighth time in ten games this season by a count of 53-43 in the January 6 game.
“Our guys played hard and did exactly what I asked them to,” Luer stated. “But they (Elmwood/Plum City) made shots when they needed to in their gym.”
Luer expressed his hope the Bulldogs, who fell to 0-4 in conference action, would be able to do the same when they host the Wolves on January 31.
The final score of the game is somewhat deceptive until you consider the Elmwood/Plum City boys put up seven three-pointers in the second half of the game. Boyceville picked up another 22 points in the second half but the Wolves netted 33 points and the win.
Bulldog Luke Knudtson led the game with 20 points after hitting five field goals, two three-pointers, and four of his eight free throw attempts. Bryce Boda returned to the team, and scored 13 points. Cooper Boesl picked up nine points, but fouled out of the game, and Jayson Gonzalez scored on a single free throw.
The Wolves’ leading scorer was Ben Glaus, who logged 14 points with a field goal, a trio of outside shots from downtown, and three free throws. Kraig Heit scored 13 points, Sam Hoyt scored nine, Luke Bauer chalked up seven, Anthony Ebensperger recorded six, and Connor Hinrichs took credit for four.
The Bulldogs remain winless in the Dunn-St. Croix play along with Glenwood City. They will travel to Mondovi on January 12 to meet the Buffaloes and then will host rival Glenwood City next Tuesday, January 17.
