It is still early in the season but the Boyceville wrestling team is still juggling its line-up to try and cover for some open weight slots.
The Bulldogs had as many as four open weight classes at the beginning of the season and although it is down to two, it is affecting the outcome of duals.
One does not need to look any further than last week’s results.
Wrestling four duals in the span of three days, Boyceville earned a split which included a pair of close defeats in the Ladysmith Duals.
The Bulldogs kicked off its final week of competition before breaking for the Christmas holiday by hosting its namesake from Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm. In the annual “Battle of the Bulldogs” held December 20, Boyceville dominated en route to a 63-15 victory.
Two days later, Boyceville traveled northeast to partake in the Ladysmith Duals which was a recent addition to the Bulldogs’ schedule after the Osceola Duals had been canceled the previous Saturday due to a winter storm.
The Bulldogs dropped their first two duals, losing close matches to Cadott, 40-34, and host Ladysmith, 40-36, before rebounding to trounce Superior, 63-18, in the finale of the December 22 event.
The latest duals left Boyceville, currently ranked eighth in Division 3 by the Wisconsin Wrestling online poll, with an 8-6 mark.
The Bulldogs will be competing in the annual Northern Badger Wrestling Classic this Thursday and Friday, December 29 and 30.
Boyceville Dominates Chetek
In recent seasons, the annual “Battle of the Bulldogs” dual between Boyceville and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser has proved to be a one-sided affair, usually Boyceville’s favor.
And this year’s match-up was not different as Boyceville dominated from start to finish and earned a 63-15 win.
“Great night of wrestling for the (Boyceville) Bulldogs,” said head coach Jamie Olson. “We matched up well with Chetek and our kids came out and wrestled with a lot of intensity.”
“Micadin Kahl came out strong with a pin to start the dual off and we never let up from there,” said Olson. “It was Micadin’s first varsity match ever and he looked great!”
Kahl’s 2:30 pin over CWPF’s Levi Chamberlain was impetus for a dominating evening of wrestling for Boyceville as it went on to garner six forfeits and four pins – Kahl (138), Sam Retz (152), Brock Schlough (160) and James Palmer (182) – in the first 11 matches.
CWPF’s only points came in the dual’s final three bouts as it received forfeits at 120 and 126 pounds and an overtime victory at 132.

After just a days rest, Boyceville made an impromptu trek to Ladysmith for a 4-team dual meet on December 22.
With a few holes in its line-up, the Bulldogs came up a little short in its first two duals, losing by six points to Cadott in the opener and only four to host Ladysmith.
But Boyceville dominated in its final match, earning a 63-18 win over Superior.
“We lost a hard fought battle to Cadott,” said Olson of the opening dual. “We didn’t have our full line-up going in, but we moved guys in and around to fill holes.”
“We got caught and pinned in two matches that I thought we were in control of winning,” added Olson.
After splitting the first four matches with Cadott, Boyceville took a 28-18 lead on pins by James Palmer (195) and Noach Novotney (285) and a forfeit to Garrett Joles at 220.
Cadott won a close decision at 106 pounds and received a forfeit at 113 to close to within a point of the Bulldogs at 27-28.
Shiann Wagner received a forfeit at 120 to give Boyceville some cushion at 34-27 but the Hornets scored a forfeit (126), a decision (132) and major decision (138) in the final three matches to win 40-34.
Sam Retz also had a pin at 152 for Boyceville and Brock Schlough scored a major decision at 160.
Boyceville next dual was against the host Lumberjacks. And it was another barnburner.
Ladysmith built a 40-6 advantage on four falls and a pair of forfeits.
But the Bulldogs came barking back as Schlough, Palmer, Novotney and Justin Malean all scored falls and Joles added a forfeit.
The rally, however, fell four points short as both teams forfeited at 285 pounds to end the dual.
“Great dual meet that came down to the last match again! I believe we have wrestled 7 duals where this has been the case this season,” noted Olson.
In the final dual of the evening,
Boyceville dominated the Spartans of Superior winning 63-18 behind pins by Jerod Nelson (145) Trey Brinker (152), Schlough (16), Malean (170), Joles (195), Hunter Lipke (220) and Novotney (285).
Four Bulldogs finished the dual unbeaten. Joles, Schlough and Novotney were all 3-0 while Palmer was 2-0. Three others – Wagner, Malean and Nick Goodell – finished 2-1.
