Bulldog boys’ basketball struggles against Spring Valley, Colfax

The road has been unkind to the Boyceville boys’ basketball team so far this year.

The Bulldogs embarked on a three-game road swing over the last week and came up short in all three ventures including a pair of lopsided losses to open Dunn-St. Croix action.

When most people think of Cardinals, they think of pretty, gentle, bright red birds. They certainly do not think a Cardinal would attack and destroy an animal such as a Bulldog.

Yet that is exactly what happened on December 6 when the Boyceville charged into Spring Valley. The Cardinals attack was swift and decisive as the Bulldogs limped back home to lick their wounds after a 73-33 beat-down.

Things didn’t get much better for the Bulldogs when they traveled to Colfax December 9 and were outscored nearly two to one by the Vikings in the 62-33 loss.

The Bulldogs are now 1-4 overall and have a Dunn-St. Croix record of 0-2. They will try to get back on a winning track this Thursday, December 15, when they host defending D-SC champion Elk Mound before taking to the road to play Turtle Lake next Tuesday, December 20.

Spring Valley

Those darn Red Birds just would not let up against Boyceville.

The Cardinals attempted 60 field goals and made 28, while the Bulldogs attempted 50 and made only 15 when Boyceville took a road trip to Spring Valley and left on the low end of a 73-33 score.

Spring Valley led 31 to 16 at the intermission and then went on to outscore Boyceville 42-17 in the second half.

Juniors Luke Knudtson and Bryce Boda led the Bulldog offensive effort with 16 points and 10 points respectively, but Cooper Boesl and Jayson Gonzales were the only other Boyceville players to score in the game. Boesl recorded five points, and Gonzales sent in a single field goal to log two points.

On the other side of the court, sophomore Dylan Bosshart led the Cards with 19 points. The Cardinals committed seven fouls, while the Bulldogs recorded nine.

Colfax

Knudtson again led the Bulldog offensive effort, but the Vikings held him to 14 points, nine points below his early season average.

Boyceville struggled to find the basket and get shots to drop during their December 9 road game against the Vikings.

The Bulldogs managed only five field goals in the first half and nine in the second, but incurred only nine fouls over the course of the game.

Colfax, by contrast, put in eight field goals in the first and 10 in the second, with six shots from downtown to add another 18 points.

Knutdson and Bryce Larson each had a pair of field goals in the opening half while Bryce Boda added a two-pointer. But George Scharlau had a trio of two-pointers and triple to led Colfax to a 25-14 led at the half.

After the intermission, the Vikings’ senior duo of Aliymu Davis and Jacob Larson caught fire scoring 11 and ten points respectively in the second half while sophomore Ben Thompson threw down three triples as Colfax outscored Boyceville 37-19 enroute to the convincing win.

Junior Cooper Boesl sunk three field goals to earn six points, Bryce Larson and Bryce Boda tied with four points each. Jayson Gonzales hit a field goal and free throw for three points, and Logan Knudtson picked up two on a single shot in the second half.

Viking senior Aliymu Davis led Colfax with 16 points.
