Boyceville grapplers finish third at the Wisconsin Dells Duals, rally to beat Clear Lake

WISCONSIN DELLS — Despite a few open weight and moving up to a higher level of competition, the Boyceville wrestling team performed quite well in the 2016 Dells Duals Classic held at the Chula Vista Resort near Wisconsin Dells.

After winning Pool D with a perfect 5-0 dual record at last year’s Dells Duals, the Bulldogs, ranked seventh in the first Division 3 poll of the season, were bumped up to Pool B (second highest) in this year’s tournament. Boyceville finished third in the six-team pool with a 3-2 mark.

The dual-style tournament splits the 30 competing teams into six, six-team pools with the highest ranked six in Pool A, the next six in Pool B and so forth.

The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss to Iowa-Grant/Highland, losing the opening round match 40-39. Boyceville trailed 40-15 before scoring a pair of pins and forfeits in the final four matches.

But the Bulldogs rebounded to take the next three duals; edging Melrose-Mindoro/G.E.T. 38-33 in the second round and besting Reedsburg 39-23 and Oshkosh North 48-30 in the third and fourth rounds respectively.

Boyceville finished the competition against Division 1 Elkhorn, who received honorable mention in the biggest schools 2016 inaugural state poll. Elkhorn swept to the victory winning the first six matches and ten of the dual’s 14 bouts to post a convincing 55-19 win over the Bulldogs. Sam Retz and James Palmer scored pins in the match while Garret Joles earned a majored decision at 220 pounds and Brock Schlough got a tough 4-1 decision at 160 for Boyceville’s only wins.

“The boys wrestled well,” said Boyceville head coach Jamie Olson, whose squad tuned up for the Dells Duals with a 42-33 come-from-behind home victory over Clear Lake on Tuesday, December 6.

“We lost a tough match opening round against Iowa-Grant/Highland. We were leading by 5 going into the last match and we got caught in a head lock and lost by one point,” noted Olson. “The team responded to win the next three duals. We ended the day with a very talented Elkhorn team that was loaded with seniors and ranked wrestlers.”

“I was proud of the effort and intensity through out the day,” Olson stated.

Sophomore Brock Schlough (160) and senior James Palmer (182) finished with unblemished 5-0 records in the Dells. Schlough tallied four pins and won a tight 4-1 decision over Elkhorn’s Bryce Jacobson in his final match of the day. Palmer registered three falls and received a pair of forfeits.

Garrett Joles, wrestling between 195 and 220 pounds, Noah Novotney (285) and Sam Retz (145) finished 4-1 on the day. All four of Retz’ wins came via pins. Joles’ lone setback came against Reedsburg’s Dalton Hahn, who won 4-3.

Three other Bulldogs registered three wins in their five matches. Nick Goodell (126), Justin Malean (170) and Hunter Lipke (220 and 195) all tallied 3-2 records in the tournament.

“I want to give praise to Hunter Lipke for going 3-2 on limited practice and experience,” said Olson. “He is a great addition to our team in the upper weights.”

Dylan Mcnew and Jason Swanepoel both won their junior varsity weight divisions said Olson.

The Bulldogs will compete in the Osceola Dual tournament this Saturday, December 17 and will host Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie next Tuesday, December 20.

Beat Clear Lake

The Bulldogs found themselves trailing the Clear Lake Warriors 33-15 in its home opener Tuesday, December 6. But Boyceville scored four pins and a major decision in the final five matches to rally for a 42-33 dual win.

Noah Novotney scored a pin at heavyweight to open the dual and Eli Swanson received a forfeit at 106 pounds to give Boyceville an early 12-0 advantage. But Clear Lake won six of the next seven bouts including three by forfeit and two others on pins to take an 18-point lead after the 152-pound match.

But Brock Schlough, Cody Frederick, Justin Malean and James Palmer scored consecutive first-period pins to give the Bulldogs a 39-33 lead. In the final match of the dual, Boyceville junior Garrett Joles secured the victory with a 13-6 win at 220 pounds.
