Bulldogs ruin Vikes’ homecoming, earn first D-SC victory with 32-6 win

COLFAX — The Boyceville football team let Colfax have the first say in the Vikings’ homecoming contest played here October 7, but after that, coach Brian Roemhild’s Bulldogs did all the barking.

After spotting Colfax the first score and a 6-0 lead, which the Vikings maintained through halftime, Boyceville scored 32 unanswered points in the second half to claim it’s first Dunn-St. Croix victory of the 2016 season with the 32-6 win.

The Bulldogs offense rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns and passed for another 80 and a score to take control in the second while their defense sacked Colfax quarterback Brad Kamp six times and held the Vikings’ offense to just 72 yards total including a negative eight yards passing to chalk up a big win on Colfax’ home field last Friday.

Boyceville improved to 1-4 in conference and 3-5 in all games. The loss was Colfax’ 12th straight conference defeat, a streak that began October 17, 2014 with a 14-0 shutout at the hands of the Bulldogs. The Vikings are currently 0-5 in league play and 1-7 overall.

Roemhild credited an excellent game by the Boyceville defense for holding Colfax to a lone touchdown which came in the first quarter.

“The lone score that Colfax got came after a turnover on a short field,” Roemhild said. “Our ends did a great job of keeping the Colfax’ quarterback in the pocket.

Although both teams had been eliminated from playoff consideration the previous week, each was playing for pride.

Colfax pounced on the first opportunity it was presented.

The Vikings’ only touchdown came following a Bryce Boda fumble at the Bulldog 12-yard line. Colfax quarterback Brad Kamp connected with wide receiver Tyler Snyder on a 10-yard pass play that netted the Vikings six with 3:53 left in the first quarter.

Boyceville was able to stop Colfax back Brett Schindler on the conversion attempt to keep the score 6-0.

The half ended without another score by either side.

Shut out through the first 24 minutes of play, Boyceville and its offense finally got on track in a big way. The Bulldogs tallied five touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the final two periods of play to travel home with the win.

The Bulldogs got moving quickly in the third quarter, when Boda put the ball in the hands of Gavin Olson who slipped into the end zone on a two-yard run to put Boyceville on the board. Boda’s conversion run failed, and the score was even at 6-6 with 6:45 left in the third.

A little over four minutes later, Boda handed the ball to Hunter Lipke, who ran two yards to paydirt and gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game. After another failed two-point attempt, the Bulldogs held the lead 12-6 with 2:23 on the clock for the third.

Boda broke the plane from two yards out on a quarterback keeper to raise the score again, and his conversion pass hit Micadin Kahl to give the Bulldogs another two and make the score 20-6 at 6:34 of the fourth quarter.

A little over a minute later, Boda nailed Kahl again this time for a 38-yard pass completion and touchdown. Boda’s conversion pass fell incomplete but the Bulldogs led the game 26-6 with five minutes left to play.

Lipke took the handoff from Boda for a 13-yard touchdown with 3:05 left in the game to make the score 32-6. Olson’s conversion attempt failed, and the clock bled off the remaining minutes of the game without further scores.

Roemhild was pleased by the offensive effort he saw from his team in the second half.

“We scored on five possessions in a row,” he said. “We were able to control the line of scrimmage and our backs really started to run north and south hard.”

Hunter Lipke led the Bulldogs ground game with 121 yards and two touchdowns on 21 hauls, Gavin Olson added a score and 76 yards on 15 carries while Boda rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown and threw for another on a six-for-nine performance for 77 yards.

The Bulldogs will play their final regular-season game at home when they play host to the Mondovi Buffaloes on October 14.
