Toppers see winning set against Northwestern, drop three straight against Plum City

By Cara L. Dempski

The Hilltopper volleyball squad still hasn’t added a “W” to this year’s record, but they continue to improve.

The team lost its first two sets in the September 27 home match against non-conference foe Northwestern, 25-19 and 25-17, before picking themselves up and cramming a 25-11 set win down Northwestern’s throat. The Hilltoppers then lost the fourth and decisive set 25-14.

Glenwood stepped back into conference play with their September 29 trip to Plum City to meet the Blue Devils. The Hilltoppers were on the receiving end of a sweep, after losing 25-20, 25-14 and 25-17 to the Plum City squad.

Glenwood City heads into its final two weeks of conference play with a record of 0-15 overall and 0-4 in the Dunn-St. Croix. The Hilltoppers hosted Durand last night and will play in Boyceville on October 6 before returning to their home court to host conference co-leader Colfax on October 11.

The Hilltoppers planted 23 kills over four sets against Northwestern on September 27. Senior Becca Moll led the team with 10, while sophomore Delaney Quinn dropped in seven.

Abby Kremer, Tressa Peskar and Michaela Nyhus all contributed two kills to the team total. Moll also took credit for four block kills.

Coach Christa Blaser said it was a fun night, and she was happy to see the team’s confidence growing.

“They looked good, and played some good ball,” she stated. “It was exciting to see them believing in themselves.”

Blaser added that as the team’s confidence grows, so will the speed and skill of each player.

Coach Christa Blaser said the Hilltoppers’ 0-3 loss to the Blue Devils on September 27 was a tough one.

Even so, the team recorded 19 kills for the night. Seven kills belonged to Delaney Quinn, Becca Moll took four more, and Peskar recorded another three.
