Topper girls cross country wins in Spring Valley, boys fourth

SPRING VALLEY — The Glenwood City girls’ cross country team scored 47 points to cop another team win at the Spring Valley cross country meet held September 29. The boys placed fourth out of six teams with 96 points.

Emily Bethell placed second in a field of 44 runners with a time of 20:34.1. Senior Taylor Drinkman trailed Bethell by nearly two minutes, but finished third with her 22:12.05 race.

Freshman Isabella Williams crossed the finish line in 22:49.82 to take seventh place, Makayla O’Brien took 11th for her 23:44.98 run, and Elizabeth Wink was 24th with a time of 26:01.96.

Senior Kaylie Scalze was 28th with a time of 26:21.72, Emma Scholler finished in 28:42.96 to take 35th, and freshman Nyah Anderson was 44th with a time of 34:45.36.

While the Hilltopper girls took first place as a team, Elmwood/Plum City’s Kassye Todd won the overall race with a time of 20:22.55.

On the boys’ team, juniors Jacob Nadeau and Matthew Bauman were the first two Hilltoppers to finish. Nadeau took 11th place after racing to a 19:33.75 finish, and Bauman was right behind him with a race time of 19:43.99. Bauman took 12th place.

Freshman Aaron Holmquist finished in 21st with his 20:48.1 time, and senior Corey Klatt was 25th with his 21:05.12 run. Lane O’Meara, another freshman runner, was 27th after crossing the finish line in 21:08.71.

Elijah Simmons, Jabin Hojem and Kyle Meyers also ran for the Hilltopper boys. Simmons crossed the finish line at 21:29.48 to take home 31st place, Hojem was 40th with his 22:43.6 run, and Meyers was 48th after finishing in 24:23.74.

Durand’s boys’ team won the meet with all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top six spots overall. Panther runner Brett Tomlinson was the boys individual race winner with a time of 17:35.49.

The Hilltoppers are scheduled to run at the Durand Invitational on October 6, and will head to South Middle School in Eau Claire on October 8. The following Thursday, October 13, they will participate in the Dunn-St. Croix conference meet hosted by Mondovi.
