Spring Valley spoils Boyceville homecoming

BOYCEVILLE — For the second straight week, the Boyceville football team found itself staring up at a large halftime deficit.

Spring Valley, the Dunn-St. Croix champions,  scored on the ground, through the air and twice on special teams to take a commanding 34-0 halftime lead over  Boyceville here last Friday evening.

Unlike their previous week’s shutout loss in Durand, the Bulldogs were able to generate some offense and a score in the second half, but it was far from enough.

Spring Valley, who freely substituted throughout the final two quarters of play on both sides of the ball, spoiled Boyceville’s long awaited home opener and annual homecoming contest with a 34-6 win on Evenson Field September 16.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-2 in conference play and 2-3 overall. Spring Valley, meanwhile, remained unbeaten and kept pace with Glenwood City, Boyceville’s next opponent, who also stayed perfect with a lopsided victory over Mondovi.

The Cardinals tallied 254 yards of offense (210 rushing), much of it in the first half, compared to the Bulldogs’ 118 yards, 74 of which came via the pass. It was special teams that proved a back breaker for Boyceville.

The Bulldogs surrendered a pair of special team scores in the first half.

“We have to improve our special teams play,” said Brian Roemhild, Boyceville head coach.

“You can’t let a good team like Spring Valley have good field position every series,” added Roemhild.

It took the Cardinals just 12 seconds to break the ice Friday night. Tyson Kado returned Tristan Talmage’s game-opening kick 78 yards for a Spring Valley touchdown. Brock Bune put the extra point kick through the middle of the uprights to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead before many in the homecoming crowd had a chance to take a seat.

After picking up a first down on its initial possession of the game, Boyceville went backwards picking up a pair of offsides penalties and losses on two running plays.

Faced with a fourth and 17, the Bulldogs punted. Micadin Kahl’s punt went 27 yards, and Seth Schlegel returned it 19 yards to the Boyceville 38.

It didn’t take the Cardinals long to puncture the end zone a second time. Quarterback Sean Borgerding’s 21-yard run set the Cardinals up with a first and goal at the Bulldogs’ five. Jayden Nyeggen carried the ball twice, the latter for a two yard score at 5:37. Bune again tacked on the kick to make it 14-0 in the Cardinals’ favor.

Boyceville had to punt after three plays that did not gain a yard.

Spring Valley took over on its 34 and moved past the midfield stripe to the Boyceville 39 before the Bulldogs’ defense stuffed Nyeggen on a fourth-and-two run to take over on downs.

Boyceville would end up punting for the third time.

Borgerding went for the end zone on a long pass attempt that Boyceville’s Kyle intercepted with a nifty one-handed grab to give the Bulldogs the ball at their own six.

But even with the aid of a Valley offside penalty, the Bulldogs were once again forced to punt the ball away on a fourth-and-one on their 15.

Borgerding returned the punt 21 yards to set Spring Valley up at the Boyceville 29. Borgerding delivered, carrying the ball for gains of 22 yards and one yard, the latter for a touchdown that capped an abbreviated four-play scoring drive at 6:11. Bune’s extra point made it 21-0.

Unfortunately, Spring Valley was just getting started in the second quarter.

After getting the ball back following another Boyceville punt, Borgerding lofted a pass to Zach Boisen for a 44-yard completion and touchdown at 2:54. Bune’s kick completed the three-play drive to make it 28-0.

Boyceville suffered a pair of offensive penalties and gave up a sack, leading to a punt in the shadow of its own goal line.

Kahl’s punt went 27 yards and was taken by Seth Schlegel, who returned it 35 yards for the what would be the Cardinals final score of the game at 1:28. Bune missed his first PAT but Spring Valley took a 34-0 cushion into the intermission.

Boyceville came out of the break and put together its best drive of the evening.

Taking the second-half kick off, the Bulldogs marched 67 yards in 13 plays for its only score of the night – a 13-yard quarterback keeper by Bryce Boda at 5:10 of the third quarter. A 25-yard pass completion from Boda to Micadin Kahl was the big play of the series. The Bulldogs conversion pass fell incomplete leaving the score 34-6.

The teams exchanged punt before Boyceville recovered a Spring Valley fumble in the fourth quarter. Boyceville was unable to capitalize as a pair of would-be Boda touchdown passes were dropped by his receivers.

“I was very proud of how our team stayed together and played in the second half,” said Roemhild. “But we have to become more consistent and play all four quarters of football.”

Boda finished 7-12 for 74 yards passing and lead the Boyceville rushers with 15 carries for 22 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Lipke added 20 yards on 14 carries. Micadin Kahl had four catches for 62 yards and Cooper Boesl finished with three grabs for 12 yards.

The Bulldogs will travel to rival Glenwood City this Friday. The Hilltoppers, ranked eighth in Division 6, are unbeaten and will be looking for their sixth win of the season when they welcome Boyceville for homecoming.
