DURAND — Boyceville’s Bulldog football team came away from their September 9 game with Durand on the losing end of a 49-0 score.
The Bulldogs rushed for 36 yards and added only 25 yards in passing. The Panthers countered this with 71 passing yards and 278 rushing.
Boyceville head Coach Brian Roemhild said prior to the game that the Bulldogs were anticipating a large, heavy-hitting team from Durand.
“We came out and went alright in the first quarter,” Roemhild said. “Our guys came out quite physical with a couple stops.”
After that, though, it appeared that the Bulldog defense fizzled out. Despite having worked on tackling low in practice during the week, Boyceville seemed to have difficulty picking up tackles throughout the game.
Boyceville’s first possession netted them their first offensive penalty of the night, a false start that lost them five yards to replay the second down with 15 yards to go.
The possession ended when Boyceville punted the ball on a fourth-and-nine play, to give the Panthers a try at the goal line.
Roemhild said after the game, “We didn’t gain anything offensively. We can’t start first and 15 or second and 22.”
Durand’s initial drive ended on a fourth-and-20 play after Panther quarterback William Berger was sacked by Boyceville’s Tristan Talmadge. The Panthers punted away the ball, which Hunter Lipke ran back to the Bulldog 24-yard line.
The Bulldogs again played a three-and-out before Micadin Kahl punted the ball for a fair catch by Panther player Josh Biesterveld.
The back-and-forth play continued until 4:42 was left in the first. Durand’s Adayre Glaus ran 26 yards to put the Panthers on the board. Lawson Harmon added another two points with his conversion run from three yards out, and the Panthers had the lead, 8-0.
It would take until the last minute leaked away in the first for Durand to score again. Karter Kurth ran the ball 19 yards for a Panther touchdown; Harmon’s point after kick was good, and the Panthers went into the second quarter with a 15-0 lead.
The Bulldogs appeared to be mounting an attack in the opening minutes of the second quarter when quarterback Bryce Boda was intercepted by Kurth. The Panther player sprinted 73 yards back down the field to tack another six onto the score. Harmon’s extra point was again good, and the score became 23-0 with 9:11 left in the half.
“When the score is 16-zip and we’re driving down at the 20, then throw a pick six, those are things that can’t happen,” Roemhild said of the play.
The Panthers would score three more times before the end of the first half, making the score 42-0 going into halftime.
The Bulldogs managed to hold off the Panthers until 3:59 in the third, when CJ Schlosser punched through a line of Bulldogs on a one-yard gain to score. Harmon’s extra point kick was good, and the score went up to 49-0.
The fourth quarter passed without either team scoring, and the game ended as Durand’s Berger knelt with 16 seconds left on the clock.
Roemhild took responsibility for the loss, saying he and his coaching staff needs to start enforcing more disciplined play.
“Too many mistakes, and too many penalties. That’s my fault as a coach,” he said.
Coach Roemhild said the team will continue working on tackling during the week leading to September 16’s Homecoming matchup against Spring Valley.
“We’re playing for everyone in our town,” Roemhild stated. “We’re playing for all our alumni.”
