Two members of the Glen Hills Lions Club were honored recently for their many years of service to that organization. Club Vice President Tom Stack, center, presented Gordon Otterson, left and Julian Bender with plaques to honor their years of service.
Gordon Otterson has been a member of the Lions organization since 1972. He joined the Mayville, Wisconsin club at that time. After moving to Glenwood City in 1980, he was instrumental in forming the new Glen Hills Lions Club in May of 1981. As a charter member, he became the first secretary and has been the Club Secretary until this past fiscal year. During his years of service, he has been awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship.
Julian Bender transferred his Lions membership to the Glen Hills Club shortly after moving here in 1984. Bender served as the club’s Secretary and President during the late 80’s and early 90’s and became the club’s treasurer in 1997. Nineteen years later he passed that office to Todd Hagen. He has no plans of leaving the club. “It was time to have some of the newer members take on club leadership roles,” Bender said. Reflecting on his thirty-five years, and counting, as a Lion, Bender said, “the opportunity to help carry out the Lions mission, ‘We Serve’ has helped strengthen the bonds that make our community, and other throughout the word, a better place to live. I find it personally gratifying to be a part of something bigger than just my local club.”
