By Cara L. Dempski

GLENWOOD CITY — The Hilltopper volleyball team started their season with away games on August 23 against Amery and August 25 against Chetek-Weyerhaeuser.

The girls lost in three straight sets to Amery, scoring 13-25, 17-25 and 20-25. Coach Christa Blaser saw the team getting better with each set.

“You could tell the nerves were a big part of the first game,” Blaser said of the team.

In the first set, Abby Kremer, Delaney Quinn, Becca Moll and Emily Hill all landed kills. There were five kills logged in the second set as well.

Also in the second set, Quinn chalked up three service aces. Serving up other aces in the set were Moll, Maria Voeltz, Jatelyn Johnson and Megan Speiser.

The Hilltoppers dropped four sets against the Bulldogs after putting up a respectable fight in each, scoring 21-25, 25-17, 20-25 and 20-25.

All four sets saw the team pick up ten aces. Tressa Peskar led the team with four aces, while Speiser, Johnson and Briana Barstad each tacked on two apiece.

In the first set, Speiser, Quinn and Moll recorded two kills each, while Kremer, Johnson and Peskar added one apiece. The second set showed Moll and Quinn nabbing a pair of kills each, and Kremer and Peskar picking up another kill per player.

The third and fourth sets saw the Hilltoppers snagging 10 more kills, with Moll adding two more per set to her record.

“The Lady Hilltoppers are a young team,” Blazer said of her players. “Just in the few games we’ve had, it is fun to see their confidence grow.”

The Hilltoppers play a game August 30 in Owen-Withee before heading onto Ellsworth September 1.
