Glenwood golfers end season in sectional play

MARATHON — For the first time in four years, Glenwood City was not represented at the state golf tournament.

Despite a solid team performance, the Hilltopper golfers placed fourth in the WIAA Division 3 Marathon Sectional held last Tuesday, May 31. Glenwood City shot a 350, eight strokes higher than last year, when it finished third on the very same par-71 Pine Valley Golf Course.

Dunn-St. Croix runner-up Spring Valley captured its second title in as many weeks as it claimed the sectional team title with a low score of 326 as it had three golfers finish in the top five including sophomore Tyler Leach, who was second with an 18-hole score of 74.

Junior Matthew Higley won medalist honors with a 73 to help lead the Eleva-Strum Cardinals to a runner-up finish and the final state team qualifying spot. The Cardinals tallied a 341 to beat third-place finisher Cadott by three strokes.

Only the top two teams along with the top three individuals from non-qualifying teams advanced to the state tournament that was held Monday and yesterday, June 6 and 7, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.

Glenwood City senior Garret Schemionek just missed grabbing one of the three state individual-qualifying spots and extending the Toppers’ state participation to four straight years by a single stroke. Schemionek shot an 82 to finish in a two-way tie for ninth. Washburn’s Brady Stephenson earned the third and final individual state berth with a score of 81.

Glenwood City’s team played at state in 2013 while alumni Jake Hierlmeier represented the Toppers in 2014 and again last year.

Fellow senior Nathan Mrdutt finished four strokes behind Schemionek to take a share of 17th with a 86.

Senior Nate Hill and sophomore Collin Schone both carded 91s to finish in a five-way tie for 27th.

The Toppers’ fifth and final varsity player at sectionals was yet another senior Nick Schone, who shot a 106 for Coach Ron Johnson’s squad.

This was the Toppers’ fifth straight appearance in the section golf meet and seventh in the past eight years.

The 12-team sectional tournament team finishes were as follows: 1. Spring Valley 326, 2. Eleva-Strum 341, 3. Cadott 244, 4. Glenwood City 350, 5. Marathon 364, 6. Luck/Frederic and Birchwood 370 each, 8. Osseo-Fairchild 372, 9. Chequamegon 373, 10. Grantsburg 377, 11. Hurley 403 and 12. Washburn 443.
