Volunteer drivers needed for elderly, disabled and veterans in northwest WI

The Center for Independent Living for Western Wisconsin, Inc. operates an 18 county Volunteer Driver Program (New Freedom Transportation) in collaboration with North Country Independent Living in northwest Wisconsin. Over 2500 riders who are elderly or have disabilities have been given over 139,627 rides since the program began operations in 2008. The trips given include medical, social, training, employment, nutrition, and personal business such as benefits counseling, banking and other needed appointments.

The Center’s transportation program currently is in need of more volunteer drivers. Since the Center’s transportation programs began over 150 drivers have given over 183,818 volunteer hours to help our area’s elderly and disabled. Most of the riders are rural and have no other transportation options available to them. The Center reimburses the drivers at federal mileage rate (54 cents per mile) and the drivers can sign up to volunteer for as many days as they would like. Drivers must have a valid Wisconsin drivers license, clean back ground check, ability to keep accurate detailed records, and proof of liability insurance. Currently drivers are needed in the following counties; Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Iron, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, and Washburn.
