GC track teams finish fourth in regional

BALSAM LAKE —  Both the Glenwood City boys’ and girls’ track and field team placed fourth in the nine-team, WIAA Division 3 Unity Regional held Monday, May 23.

The Lady Toppers racked up 80 points as seven girls qualified in eight individual events and three of its four relay teams made it through to the sectional meet which was held three days later, Thursday, May 26, at Colfax High School.

The top four place winners in each event advances on to the sectional meet.

Glenwood City had three boys make the sectional cut in four events while all four of its relays moved on including the 4×100 and 4×200 meters teams that placed first. The boys finished with a score of 69 points.

Grantsburg claimed the girls’ team title with 142 points, nine more than runner-up Shell Lake while host Unity amassed 217 points to win the boys’ crown. The Grantsburg boys were a distant second with 201 points.

Sophomore Darian Multhauf laid claim to the Hilltoppers only individual title as he won the 100 meter dash in :11.58.

Another member of the Topper boys’ strong sophomore  class, Ethan Kahler, scored seconds in both hurdling event to advance to the sectional meet.

Fellow sophomore Jacob Kopacz was the third and final individual sectional qualifier as he finished third behind classmate Darian Multhauf in the 10 meters.

Multhauf and Kopacz were joined by Jacob Nelson and Carson Strong to run both the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay races. The quartet took gold in both events, finishing with respective times of :45.44 and 1:34.75.

The 4×400 and 4×800 meter squads also earned sectional berths by placing fourth.

Placing at the regional meet but not advancing were: junior Allen Croes, who took sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus; sophomore Riley Schutz and senior Wesley Franklin, who both finished eighth in the 1,600 meter and 800 meter runs respectively.

Three of the Lady Toppers’ four relays qualified for sectional competition.  The 4×100 meter team of Mariah Voeltz, Megan Speiser, Tressa Peskar and Gabby Peterson placed second. Gabby Peterson also ran on the 4×400 meter runner-up along with Maya Petersen, Elizabeth Wink and Morgan Kadinger. The 4×800 meter team was third and the 4×200 meter group took fifth but did not advance.

While the girls did not have any individual winner, there were several second and third place finishes.

Senior Rachel Klatt qualified for sectional competition in two events, taking second in the shot put (36’ 0/75”) and third in the discus (93’ 10”).

Elizabeth Wink and Taylor Drinkman earned Glenwood City’s two remaining silvers. Wink was the runner-up in the 400 meters (1:04.60) while Drinkman finished second in the 3,200 meters (12:39.22).

Gabby Peterson placed third in the 100 meters (:13.46); senior Morgan Kadinger finished with a third in the 80-0 meters (2:28.19) and sophomore Mikayla O’Brien took fourth in the pole vault (6’ 6”) to earn sectional berths. O’Brien was also eighth in the 800.
