Boyceville girls are regional runners-up

BOYCEVILLE — There really is no place like home.

And the Boyceville girls’ track and field team made the most of their home track advantage when the Bulldogs hosted the WIAA Division 3 regional meet Monday, May 23.

The small but talented troupe of Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a banner day that saw them score 95 points and finish as the runners-up in the nine-team meet highlighted by the 4×100 meter relay team’s record-setting performance. In all, the girls advanced to the sectional in eight individual events and the relay.

Meanwhile, the boys, who placed eighth with 54 points, swept the top three spots in the pole vault and qualified four individuals and the 4×800 meter relay squad for the sectional meet which was held Thursday, May 26 in Colfax.

The top four place finishers in each event earned berths in the sectional competition.

Eau Claire Regis won the girls’ regional championship with 141 points while Chippewa Falls McDonell Central copped the boys’ title with a score of 111. Fall Creek’s boys took second after tallying 103 points.

After chasing a 30 year-old school record for much of the season, the team of senior Ireland McAbee-Thomas and juniors Erica Sempf, Carlee Schultz and Cassie Malean set a new school standard of :52.67 on it’s way to winning the 4×100 meter relay event.

The girls also achieved some new personal bests.

Emma Harnisch had a pair of personal bests. She cleared eight feet in the pole vault for the first time to take second behind fellow junior and teammate Brooklyn Booth, who won the event with a vault eight feet. Harnisch also bested her top 300 meter low hurdles time by four second to take third in a :53.62 and just missed qualifying in the 100 meter high hurdles after finishing fifth.

Cassie Malean sophomore Emily Voelker and Ireland McAbee-Thomas each scored points in a pair of events.

Malean made five feet in the high jump to finish second and ran a :13.68 in the 100 meters for fourth and qualified for the sectional meet in both events. Malean also placed ninth in the long jump.

Voelker finished seventh in the pole vault, the Lady Bulldogs third member to score points in the event, and ran to an eighth-place finish in the 400 meters.

McAbee-Thomas took third in the triple jump with a sectional-qualifying leap of 31’ 8.75” and was seventh in the long jump.

Sophomores Haley Wold and Paulina Wenke both made the sectional cut in the discus taking second and third respectively. Satina Chilson, another sophomore member of the discus team, placed seventh.

Just missing the sectional cut was senior Anna Hagen, who took fifth in the 300 meter low hurdles.

Erica Sempf finished sixth in the long jump. The girls’ 4×400 meter relay team also placed sixth.

Senior Brandon Windsor and junior Tyler Krueger won gold for the Boyceville boys.

Krueger jumped 12 feet even to win the pole vault competition while teammates Brandon Kenefick (10’ 9”) and Michael Chich (9’ 6”) came in second and third respectively.

Windsor topped the shot put field in his final home meet taking the regional title with a put of 42’ 6”.

Junior Caleb Hagen finished fourth and qualified in the 800 meter and helped the 4×800 meter relay team that also included Jack Kapsner, Brandon Malean and Rian Corr earn a sectional berth with a third-place finish.

The boys other three relays also scored points. The 4×100 meter team was fifth, the 4×200 took sixth and the 4×400 m crew finished seventh.
