GC girls take third in SCC track meet

HAMMOND — A pair of first-places finishes coupled with half a dozen seconds helped the Glenwood City girls’ track and field team to third place in a five-team meet held at St. Croix Central High School last Thursday, May 5.

The Glenwood City girls tallied 41 points as Elizabeth Wink and Rachel Klatt earned the Hilltoppers’ only two gold medals of the meet.

The Toppers boys, who had just four place winners, came in last with just 11 points.

Altoona won the girls’ competition with 93.5 points with St. Croix Central taking second at 72.5.

The schools flipped positions in the boys’ race as host St. Croix Central prevailed 100.5 to  63.5 for Altoona.

Senior Rachel Klatt won the discus throw with a toss of 103’ 5” and was the runner-up in the shot with a put of 33’ 6”.

Sophomore Elizabeth Wink picked up the Lady Toppers other first when she ran to the win in the 400 meters in a time of 1:06.06.

Senior Gabby Peterson and junior Taylor Drinkman each scored seconds. Peterson was the runner-up in the 100 meters (:13.68) while Drinkman copped silver in the 1600 meter run with a time of six minutes flat.

Like fellow classmate Rachel Klatt, Morgan Kadinger pointed in a pair of events. Kadinger ran a 2:32 for second in the 800 meter run and placed fourth in the high jump.

Hanna Strehlo earned points in three events when she placed sixth in the 800 meters, was seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump.

Three of the girls’ four relay teams also finished in the points, Both the 4 x 200 and 4 x 800 teams were second with the 4 x 100 meter team taking third.

Sophomore Jacob Nelson scored in two events to led the boys. He took second in the 200 meters in a time of :25.31 and was fifth in the 100 meters (:11.93).

Third-place finishes went to senior Wesley Franklin in the 800 meter and sophomore Riley Schutz in the 1600 meter runs.

Senior Andrew Bauman completed the boys scoring by taking seventh in the 1600 meters.

The Toppers competed in Colfax yesterday and will host a meet Thursday (weather permitting).

Glenwood City will also host the Dunn-st. Croix Conference meet this year which is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 17.
