Bulldog girls finish third at Glenwoood City track meet; Hilltopper gals fifth, boys sixth

Malean a Triple Winner

GLENWOOD CITY — It may have been a bit cool and damp but Boyceville’s Cassie Malean was red hot on the track and in the field at a Glenwood City meet held April 18.

The junior had a banner day winning three events – the 100 meters, high jump and long jump – to lead the Boyceville girls to a third-place showing at the seven-team meet that featured several Dunn-St. Croix conference schools. The Lady Bulldogs also got first-place finishes from senior Ireland McAbee-Thomas and juniors Erica Sempf and Brooklyn Booth as the team tallied 127 points.

Morgan Kadinger scored a first and a second place finish to help the Glenwood City girls to fifth place in their own meet.

Somerset won the girls’ competition with 145 points followed by Elk Mound at 134.

The Mounders copped the top spot in the boys’ race as they scored 143.5 points. Durand was second after it scored 136 points and Somerset finished third with 91 points.

The Glenwood City boys placed sixth with 72 points and Boyceville was seventh with a 58.5.

Malean was virtually unbeaten Monday afternoon and evening in Glenwood City. She not only posted individual victories in the 100 meter (:13.52), the high jump (4’ 10” edging out Kadinger on a tie breaker) and the long jump (15’ 9”), Malean also anchored the Lady Bulldogs winning 4 x 100 meter relay team.

Two other Boyceville gold medalists also ran on the victorious 4 x 100 squad – Erica Sempf and Ireland McAbee-Thomas – along with its fourth member Carlee Schultz .

Sempf won the shot put with a toss of 36’ 3” finished second in the long jump, slightly more than four inches behind Malean, and ran to a fifth in the 200 meters.

McAbee-Thomas also scored in three individual events. She captured the triple jump title with a leap of 31’ 2”, was second to Sempf in the shot (35’ 3”) and ran to a seventh place in the 100 meters.

Brooklyn Booth scored the Boyceville girls’ final first with a personal best of 8’ 6” in the pole vault and had a sixth in the 400.

Sophomore Emma Harnisch finished second in the pole vault and was seventh in the 400 meters.

Senior Morgan Kadinger provided Glenwood City with its lone individual first place finish of the meet. She won the girls’ 800 meters in 2:35.46 and took second in the high jump on criteria even though she equalled Malean’s winning height of 4’ 10”.

Kadinger also anchored the Lady Toppers winning 4 x 800 meter relay team (10:47.34) which also included Taylor Drinkman, Megan Speiser and Makayla O’Brien.

Glenwood City also earned a pair of seconds in the 4 x 200 m and 4 x 400 m relays and a third in the 4 x 100 m event.

Rachel Klatt, a GC senior, took third in the discus.

On the boys’ side, Boyceville junior Tyler Krueger claimed the only gold after he vaulted 11’ even to win the pole vault. He also finished fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles.

Sophomore teammates Brandon Kenefick took third in the pole vault. Sam Retz also grabbed a third in the 1,600 meter run as did the Bulldog boys’ 4 x 800 meter relay squad.

The Glenwood City boys’ lone first-place finish came in the 4 x 800 meter relay. The team consisting of seniors Jack Kremer and Wesley Franklin and sophomores Riley Schutz and Owen Wagner turned in a winning time of 9:28.59. The Toppers also took second in the boys’ 4 x 100 meter race and a pair of third in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 meter relays.

The top individual place finishes for the Glenwood City boys were a trio of thirds. Sophomore Ethan Kahler finished third in both hurdling events (110 m highs and 300 m intermediates) while junior Austin Wannemacher had a bronze finish in the discus.
