A Word to the Wise – 2-10-2016

by Dr. Walter Olsen

How can one bring special blessing to his own children? So often we reason that if we just give to our children all they want and ask for that they will be happy and we can feel good about what we have done.

Perhaps most of us want our children to be blessed with material things. However, that is not what makes for real happiness either for the children or for the parents. A better way is the Lord’s way. The Bible says, “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him” (Prov. 20:7). The greatest gift parents can give their children is the example of a righteous life. It is a life that is lived for the glory of God. It is not a perfect life, but a life that seeks to honor God and obey His word. Things wear out, get lost, or lose their attraction. The example of a life lived righteously, however, never loses its value. It will be there to remind, correct, encourage, and direct in the things that really count, the things of God. Such a Godly example can only come out of one’s personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. It is giving place to Christ that will bring true and lasting blessing to one’s children.
