Glenwoood grapplers corral Mondovi; take two of three at Prescott Quad
While the spotlight and attention has been focused on its Dunn-St. Croix brethren from Spring Valley/Elmwood and Boyceville, the Glenwood City wrestling team has quietly put together an outstanding season of its own.
The Hilltoppers, whose accomplishments have drawn some recent notice as noted by a honorable mention in the state’s division 3 team rankings, continued to build on their successes last week tallying three more dual victories in four opportunities, all in a 24-hour period, including an impressive win in the squad’s conference dual season opener.
Glenwood City kicked off its Dunn-St. Croix dual season last Thursday, January 14 with an impressive 60-16 in Mondovi and followed it the next evening by taking two out of three matches at the Prescott Quadrangular, besting conference member Durand 53-24 and the host 58-18. The lone loss was a 42-25 setback to a much larger Eden Prairie, MN team. With last week’s 3-1 effort, the Toppers improved to 16-3 in duals this season.
Mondovi
Glenwood City collected nine forfeits en route to a 60-16 victory in its conference dual opener at Mondovi January 14.
Although the Buffaloes fielded just five wrestlers for last Thursday dual, it proved to be quality over quantity as the Hilltoppers wrestlers were tested in those contested matches.
“Despite the number of forfeits, we knew we would have a few good matchups for our state-ranked kids,” said Shane Strong, Glenwood City’s head coach.
At 126 pounds, 12th ranked Carson Strong held sway through his match against Mondovi’s Nick Pelke for a 9-3 decision.
“Carson had a chance to wrestle Pelke, who is a solid wrestler,” Coach Strong said of his son’s match. “I though Carson came out attacking right away and scored early. He continued to control the match the entire six minutes which is what we are looking for.”
The very next match, at 132 pounds, pitted a pair of state-ranked combatants. The Buffaloes Austin Fedie, ranked 12th in the weight class, pinned the Toppers’ 9th ranked Marcus Ullom in 3:53 for one of Mondovi’s two falls.
“Marcus was up 3-2 in the second period but was reversed to his back and pinned,” noted Strong. “Up to that point, he had stayed in good position and wrestled a solid match. It’s a good learning experience to make sure we wrestle every position for six minutes.”
Mondovi picked up another victory at 145 where Dillon Larson won a 12-0 major decision against the Toppers’ Kole Smith.
Spencer Peterson blanked the Buffs’ Bryce Johnson 3-0 for a solid win at 170 pounds.
“Spencer came out and got a nice win,” said Strong. “He scored a takedown early and was able to ride his opponent for two periods. I have been very happy with Spencer’s effort in practice and how much he has improved.”
Ben Andress of Mondovi pinned Bryce Fayerweather just 48 seconds in the 220-pound match for the Buffs other victory.
Glenwood City received forfeits at 106, 113, 120, 138, 152, 160, 182, 195 and 285 pounds.
The Hilltoppers will resume conference action this Thursday (January 21) when they host Durand at 7:00 p.m. Next Tuesday, January 26, Glenwood City will travel to Cadott for a non-conference dual against the Hornets.
