Boyceville batters Durand; drops three of four at Hudson Duals
A new year means the start of the all important conference dual season.
The Boyceville wrestling team kicked off their Dunn-St. Croix dual schedule with a 66-12 pummeling of the Durand Panthers before a large home crowd last Thursday evening, January 7.
The Bulldogs battered the Panthers early and often and scored six team points in each of their first seven matches to take a 42-0 lead en route to the lopsided victory.
Unfortunately, Boyceville was unable to keep that momentum rolling when it competed in the very challenging Hudson Duals just two days later. All five teams participating in Hudson Saturday, January 9 were ranked in their respective divisions and states.
Competing against the likes of Ellsworth (top ranked in Division 2), meet host Hudson (rated second in Division 1) and highly regarded and ranked Minnesota squads from Hutchinson and Stillwater, Boyceville finished just 1-3 as no individual Bulldog wrestler ended his day without a loss.
Punish Panthers
After years of competing in the Middle Border against perennial power Ellsworth, the Durand Panthers found little respite in its first foray into the Dunn-St. Croix when it traveled to Boyceville January 7.
The fifth-ranked Bulldogs welcomed the Panthers to their new conference with a 66-12 beating.
“The Durand match went well for us,” said Boyceville head coach Jamie Olson. “I thought the entire team wrestled well. We scored more offense points than usual. That has been a goal of ours. An it was nice to see a great crowd for our first home dual.”
Cody Frederick opened the dual at 152 pounds for the Bulldogs and was awarded the win after his opponent, Durand’s Alex Brantner injured his ribs and had to default.
That first six-point win would lead to several more.
Boyceville registered five pins and a forfeit in the following six matches that catapulted it to a quick 42-0 advantage. Justin Malean (160), Jordan Morse (170), Garrett Joles (182), Alec Schaffer (195) and Brandon Windsor (285) all won by falls and Noah Novotney received a forfeit at 220 pounds.
Treyden Casey finally ended Durand’s drought with a 7-3 win over the Bulldogs Nick Goodell at 106 pounds.
But at 113 pounds, Boyceville was awarded its second win by injury default after the Panthers’ Brannon Humphrey appeared to suffer a break in his left arm while wrestling the Bulldogs’ Braxton Ludtke.
Dyllon Johnson followed with Boyceville’s quickest pin of the dual when he stuck Dylan Dorwin of Durand just 48 seconds into the 120-pound match. That upped the Boyceville lead to 54-3.
Durand scored consecutive wins at 126 and 132. Lucas Wayne pinned Boyceville freshman Josh Briese at 126 and Logan Bauer’s 9-5 decision over Jason Swanepoel was the Panthers third and final win of the evening.
Junior James Palmer gave the Bulldogs another six points with a pin at 138 pounds. Brock Schlough also pocketed six team points with a dual-ending forfeit at 145 pounds.
Boyceville will host Spring Valley/Elmwood this Thursday in a dual that will, in all likelihood, determine who will be this year’s Dunn-St. Croix conference champion. The Bulldogs may have to face the Cardinals without junior Micah Johnson who was not eligible to wrestle in the Durand dual.

Hudson Duals
This year’s Hudson Dual Tournament was arguably one of the toughest in recent years as it featured five-ranked teams including the Bulldogs and a pair of Twin Cities area teams.
It was a baptism by fire for Boyceville as it opened Saturday’s tournament against Ellsworth.
These Panthers showed why they are deserving of Division two’s top spot with a convincing 50 to 18 win. Boyceville fell 49-24 to Hutchinson, MN in the second round before rebounding for a 46-20 win over Stillwater, MN. The Bulldogs’ day, however, ended on a sour note as it was only able to win a pair of matches in a 57-10 setback to Hudson.
“Great competition!” said Olson of the five-team meet. “Our goal was to compete all day long with confidence and battle for six minutes without giving up bonus points. We knew going in this was going to help us down the road for future competitions.”
“You know when no one goes undefeated its a tough tournament,” added Olson. “The three teams we lost to are as good as anyone in the state.”
Although no Boyceville wrestler finished the tournament unbeaten, four finished the day with just one loss. James Palmer, Cody Frederick, Garrett Joles and Brandon Windsor finished 3-1. Three others – Brock Schlough, Noah Novotney and Dyllon Johnson – split their four matches going 2-2.
Boyceville won just four matches against Ellsworth and five against Hutchinson.
Frederick and Windsor had pins in the Ellsworth dual while Joles and Novotney won on decisions. James Palmer and Brock Schlough lost tight one-point decisions.
Palmer and Schlough both bounced back against their respective Hutchinson opponents. Schlough scored a 19-3 technical fall and Palmer had an 8-0 shut out. Malean was victorious too as were Joles and Windsor.
Nick Goodell (106), Sam Retz (132) and Dyllon Johnson (120) picked up their first wins of the tournament in the Bulldogs round three win over Stillwater. Retz’ came on a pin. Palmer, Joles and Windsor also scored pin falls.
In the finale, Boyceville faced off with the host Raiders. Hudson dominated the dual winning 12 of the 14 matches. The Bulldogs only wins came at 132 pounds where James Palmer scored a pin and Cody Frederick’s 9-0 victory at 152 pounds.
