Boyceville wrestlers go unbeaten in the Dells Duals

WISCONSIN DELLS — What a difference a few wrestlers can make.

Without nearly half a dozen of its varsity wrestlers for various reasons, Boyceville went 2-3 in its first five duals including a 40-30 setback in Clear Lake last Tuesday, December 8.

Justin Malean and Brandon Windsor returned to the Boyceville lineup this weekend just in time for the Bulldogs’ annual excursion to Wisconsin Dells for the  prestigious Dells Duals.

The addition of the duo vaulted the Bulldogs to a top-place finish in Pool D competition with an unblemished 5-0 record at the 2015 competition held at Chula Vista resort Saturday, December 12.

Boyceville defeated Kimberly 44-25, Wautoma/Wild Rose 60-18, Reedsburg 44-32, New Richmond 51-21 and Iowa Grant/Highland 50-30; all were Division one or two schools with the exception of Iowa Grant/Highland.

“It was a great day for Boyceville wrestling,” said the Bulldogs’ head coach Jamie Olson. “It’s nice to see new competition.”

Boyceville, who has competed in the top two or three polls (A, B, or C) the past few years with two straight second-place finishes, was moved to Pool D this year based, in part, on its early season record according to Olson.

“People don’t realize we have had so many guys out of the line up,” stated Olson.

“This weekend (in the Dells), having Malean and Windsor back made a big difference.”

“I was very pleased with how intense our guys wrestled throughout the entire day,” stated Olson.

“We’ve been focusing on scoring points and not being content with close wins. We need to stretch the leads and finish matches,” continued Olson. “That was very noticeable Saturday and I commend the guys on the work they have been putting in and it showed this weekend.”

Overall, Boyceville wrestlers went a combined 46-15 in the five duals with an amazing seven individuals finishing the tournament with perfect 5-0 records.

Nick Goodell, Dyllon Johnson, Brock Swenson, Brock Schlough, Cody Frederick, Garrett Joles and Brandon Windsor finished the duals without a loss.

James Palmer went 4-1 on the day while Noah Novotney was 2-2, Tyler Krueger and Justin Malean each went 2-3 and Eli Swanson was 1-1. Jason Swanepoel finish 0-5.

Senior heavyweight Brandon Windsor led the way in his first mat time of the season as he registered five pins.

Sophomore Garrett Joles, currently ranked number one by Wisconsin Wrestling online in the 170-pound class, scored four pins and a forfeit while wrestling at 182 and 195 pounds at the Dells.

Cody Frederick scored three pins and a technical fall at 152 pounds as did freshman Nick Goodell at 106 and 113 pounds. Brock Swenson had a trio of pins too along with a major decision at 126 pounds.

Dyllon Johnson had a pair of pins at 120 pounds and freshman Brock Schlough had a pin, two forfeits and a technical fall among his five wins.

The Bulldogs had a dual in Chetek Tuesday, Dec. 15 and will  finish its pre-holiday schedule at the Osceola Invite this Saturday, Dec. 19.
