GLENWOOD CITY — While the holidays are a fun and festive time for most, it is not seen that way by all. Many are either away from family during the holidays while others cannot afford all the trappings that go along with the commercialism the Christmas season brings.
You can help Joan Bartz’s Thrivent Financial make a difference this year. Through a program called Action Teams, Thrivent encourages others to live more generous lives by giving and doing. The Glenwood City office is currently doing two action team projects that you can help with. Now through December 22nd, you can drop off new or gently used hats, mittens, gloves or scarves that will be distributed to local homeless shelters. You can place them on the tree in the Thrivent office, or drop them off when you come for their holiday open house on Thursday, December 17th from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Prior to December 14th, you can also drop off homemade Christmas cards or stop in and sign a card and add a personal greeting. We will also be signing cards at the Everwood Farmstead’s All is Calm event on December 12th. These cards will be sent out to the USS Germantown stationed off the coast of Japan to brighten the holidays for 350 young sailors.
Lt. Joseph Kessopha, the ship’s Public Affairs Officer, has this to say about the project, “We really appreciate your support in helping our sailors through this holiday season. Japan is very far away from these sailor’s families and for many of them, this is their first time being so far from home.” As a side note, Bartz’s nephew, EN3 Dakota Drinkman is stationed on this ship.
Thrivent’s Action Team program adds $250 of seed money to a fundraiser, service project or educational activity that their members organize. Each benefit member can do two projects per year.
