Bulldog split matches at Island City Duals
CUMBERLAND — Change they say is the only constant.
So after years of attending the Ellsworth Invitational to christen each new season, the Boyceville wrestling team opted for a change of scenery and format when it attended the Island City Duals at Cumberland High School Friday, December 4 to open its 2015-16 mat campaign.
Unlike Ellsworth which is an individual tournament, the five-team Cumberland Invite offered participating schools four dual matches and more opportunities for all wrestlers to register mat time.
Despite missing the services of five front-line wrestlers – Justin Malean, Brandon Windsor, Braxton Ludke, Jordan Morse and Micah Johnson – Boyceville acquitted itself well. The Bulldogs, who came within a few points of going unbeaten in the tournament, split its four duals.
Boyceville defeated host Cumberland 45-36 and Hayward, 46-28 and narrowly lost to River Falls 39-37 and Baldwin-Woodville 36-36 (on criteria).
“Overall, I was very pleased with the performance of the entire team,” noted long-time Boyceville head coach Jamie Olson.
Four Boyceville wrestlers finished the day without a loss. Junior James Palmer, sophomores Garrett Joles and Cody Frederick and freshman Brock Schlough went unbeaten.
“They were very solid in all positions,” said Olson of his undefeated quartet.
In addition, Nick Goodell, wrestling in his first varsity tournament, Dyllon Johnson and Noah Novotney finished 3-1 while Tyler Krueger and Brock Swenson were 2-2 against some very good competition.
Olson also gave kudos to Gage Brown, who despite finishing with a victory, wrestled hard in a strong heavy weight field and gained valued experience and Jason Swanepoel performed well filling in on varsity and often wrestling up a weight.
Trey Brinker, Eli Swanson, Tanner Anderson, Dylan McNew and Josh Briese all wrestled on the junior varsity slate and did a great job according to the coach.
Boyceville will be competing in the Dells Duals this weekend at the Chula Vista resort in Wisconsin Dells. The Bulldogs will then travel to Chetek for a dual on Tuesday, December 15.
Noah Novotney scored a pin at 220 pounds to open the dual against Baldwin-Woodville. The Blackhawks however scored a fall in the next match, won a decision and two forfeits to build a 21-6 advantage.
The squads would swap pins in the next four matches. Dyllon Johnson and James Palmer scored pins at 126 and 138 pounds respectively but the Bulldogs’ deficit remained at 15.
Back-to-back pins from Brock Schlough and Cody Frederick moved to the Bulldogs to within three points of the Blackhawks.
A B-W decision at 170 pushed it back to six points.
Garrett Joles took a forfeit at 182 pounds to knot the dual at 36.
And that is the way it ended as the teams had a double forfeit at 195. Baldwin-Woodville was declared the winner, however, on criteria after winning seven matches to the Bulldogs’ six.
