History of Boyceville H.S./M.S. Science Olympiad Program

Andy Hamm took over leadership of the Science Olympiad program in Boyceville High School and Middle School in 2008, where they placed ninth in the state out of fifty schools. Every year since 2009, Boyceville has placed either third or fourth. Prior to Mr. Hamm’s leadership, Boyceville had been placing in the bottom half of the rankings since joining the competition in 2000.

Retired Boyceville science teacher, Steve Durest beamed when discussing the Olympiad and how it has influenced his students. “This Olympiad extends student’s reach; it changes their expectations of themselves. Kids that participate in this competition, they see academics in a different way. We have a program here where seventh graders get invited to take high school algebra as eighth graders and when that happens, they begin high school with a higher academic expectation of themselves. One year we had a group of about a dozen eighth graders who took this high school algebra course and of them, all but three went on to take the advanced AP classes and really flourished academically in their high school years. The three students that did not go on to advanced AP classes happened to not participate in the Science Olympiad.”
