Balanced budget set for approval in November for the GC School District

GLENWOOD CITY — It was a light board meeting Monday night inside the Glenwood City School with just three items approved in the open session.

All the members were present to vote on the consent agenda, which included the approval of Christal Wakeling as a long term substitute teacher and Austin Moe as the new Middle School Wrestling Coach. The meeting minutes from the previous meeting in October were the final item.

With Thanksgiving only a couple weeks away, the Board was updated on Grandparent’s Day, which is scheduled for November 20.

There will be coffee and social time from 8:45-9:15, which is also when lunch tickets can be purchased. Then grandparents are to report to the Elementary Gymnasium for the annual concert.

Following that will be classroom time and then lunch. Family members present can then take their student(s) home following lunch and recess.

Also on the discussion board is Summer School. With the construction going on around the grounds, the idea of having Summer School at Holy Cross Lutheran Church is being tossed around since the proximity is close to the school and the park.

There is plenty of planning and discussion to do still, but that time of year will be here before long so pre-planning is in the works for Assistant Principal, Nicole Brite.

Now on the calendar for the 2016-17 school year is the first day of school, which is set to be Tuesday, September 6.

Outside on the school grounds, the softball field is set to be complete next week if the weather holds up.

Superintendent, Tim Johnson stated that the District has decided to move forward without the planned owner’s representative ICS for the remainder of the referendum process.

“With Miron as the general contractor and the large percentage of cost being related to HVAC, it no longer seems financially responsible to have a secondary representative contracted,” explained Johnson. “This will be a cost saving on the project.”

The next Board meeting is scheduled for November 23 at 5:30 p.m. The Board is set to give approval on the 2015-2016 budget and then immediately move into closed session.
