UW Colleges and UW-Extension chosen for a national project to develop an enhanced student transcript

MADISON – The University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension have been chosen to participate in a national pilot project to help define new more comprehensive academic transcript models that would incorporate student competencies like those that are the basis of the UW Flexible Option.
The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and NASPA: Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education have announced the names of the higher education institutions chosen to pilot the project, funded by Lumina Foundation.
Focusing on two- and four-year public and private institutions already developing competency or learning outcome education approaches and/or documenting co-curricular experiences, the other institutions selected to participate include: Elon University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Quinsigamond Community College, Stanford University, University of Houston-Downtown, University of Maryland University College, and University of South Carolina.
In addition to courses, grades and degrees listed on current transcripts, this project will help address student and employer demand for more detailed and validated information about what a student knows and can do.
“The transcript of the future along with new educational delivery models and different forms of certification represent cutting-edge change in the higher education ecosystem. With our emphasis on access, quality and especially innovation – as shown with UW Flex – it is no surprise that we have a seat at the table for this important and groundbreaking effort,” said Cathy Sandeen, chancellor of the UW Colleges and UW-Extension.
With $1.27 million Lumina Foundation funds supporting this work, a two-day symposium this week will kick off the year-long project that aims to have a comprehensive student record delivered to some or all of the pilot institutions’ students.
The Degree Qualifications Profile will be tested as a framework to organize student competencies on a transcript that better reflects students’ knowledge and capabilities. Campuses will be expected to equip and train academic and student services, student affairs, and other campus professionals to utilize the extended transcript frameworks.
