Boyceville cross country teams are showing steady improvement as tournament time rapidly approaches.
The Bulldogs ran in a pair of meets this last week including the New Richmond Invitational Saturday, October 3 against much larger schools including several from the Big Rivers and Middle Border Conferences. And despite, what at a glance, less than stellar finishes for the its individuals and teams, Boyceville runners turned in some of their best times of the season.
“Almost all of our runners ran season-best times at New Richmond,” noted Boyceville head coach Corey Day. “I believe our kids, who were usually in a certain place in most previous races, had to run really hard to finish Saturday. While many of our runners may not have finished where they normally would have, they still had big personal best times.”
Boyceville also competed in Spring Valley on Thursday, October 1.
Day gave kudos to Brennan Wheeldon and Lauren Dominick who both shaved five minutes off their season opening times in the New Richmond race. Wheeldon competed in the junior varsity race while Dominick was the second Bulldog girl to finish, taking 53 in 24:02.
Shiann Wagner was Boyceville top overall finisher. She placed 39th in 22:50.
Marissa Dormanen was one position behind Dominick in 54th place with a time of 24:13. Emma Harnisch took 58th with a time of 24:53 and Sarah Kapsner placed 66th after running the 5,000-meter course in 34:19.
The boys placed between 54th and 80th in the 80-runner field.
Sam Retz and Max Engel were the Bulldog boys top two finishers with sub 20-minute times. Retz was 54th in 19:18 and Engel finished two spots back in 56th after a time of 19:30. Rian Corr and Jerod Nelson came in 72nd and 73rd with times of 20:34 and 20:43 respectively. Kiel Anderson, Michael Chich and Emmett Kapsner were 77, 78, and 80th. Anderson was timed in 21:19, Chich had a 22:34 and Kapsner clocked in at 24:44.
The Boyceville squads both finished last in the team standings. The girls were ninth while the boys placed 12th. Eagan, MN won both the girls’ and boys’ team titles.
Spring Valley
Both the boys and girls teams finished sixth in Spring Valley Thursday, October 1.
Sam Retz once again led the Boyceville boys. The junior finished with a solid 19:48 time to take 12th. Max Engel was 17th in 20:20.
“Sam has been stepping up as a leader on the team,” stated Coach Day. “He ran hard and is doing all the right things to give himself the best opportunity.”
Rian Corr ran a 20:51 for 24th; Jerod Nelson took 32nd in 21:26; Kiel Anderson finished in 22:08 for 41st; Michael Chich was 45th in 22:30; Emmett Kapsner ran a 25:21 for 56th; Mark Timper finished in 28:04 for 61st; and Brennan Wheeldon was 64th in 33:16.
