Boyceville cross country teams open season at home

BOYCEVILLE — There no place like home especially to start the season.

Boyceville’s cross country squads once again kicked off their seasons hosting the annual Alumni meet at Tiffany Creek Elementary last Thursday, August 27.

The late morning start offered great conditions to the more than two dozen schools and over 300 runners that competed in this year’s event.

With some runners not competing in the opener, the Bulldogs’ team finishes suffered a bit.

After a fourth-place showing last year, the Boyceville boys’ team slipped to ninth last week while the girls, unable to field a full team, did not place.

“We had a few individual runners out so our team performances suffered,” said Corey Day, Boyceville head coach. “But I was very pleased with the first race efforts by all our runners.”

Chippewa Falls McDonell won the boys 12-team race with 38 points followed by Dunn-St. Croix teams from Colfax (62), Durand (79) and Glenwood City (125). The Bulldog boys finished with a 243 that put them in ninth just ahead of St. Croix Falls at 245.

Three Dunn-St. Croix schools took the top spots in the girls competition led by Colfax with 48, Glenwood City at 82 and Elk Mound with 110 points. Fall Creek, the girls’ champion from a year ago, was a close fourth with 111. There were ten teams competing for the girls’ title.

A strong commitment to off-season training paid dividends for Sam Retz. The  junior had the Bulldogs best finish in the home meet. Retz finished the 5,000 meter course at Tiffany Creek, which will host the  WIAA Sectional meet in a few months, in a time of 19:30.5 for 11th in the 125-runner field.

“Sam Retz was the one runner that really stood out for us,” said Day.

“He took off faster than planned but he had a smile on his face the whole race,” added the coach. “He did some training this summer and it showed in his confidence.”

Sophomore Rian Corr was the next Bulldog to cross the finish line. Corr took 28th in a time of 20:31.1.

Boyceville’s third male runner came across more than two minutes later. Junior Jerod Nelson ran a 22:48.7 to finish 69th. Micah Chich, also a junior, finished just 15 seconds later for 84th.

Sophomores Emmitt Kapsner, Casey Owen and Mark Timper completed the Boyceville team. Kapsner ran a 27:22.1 for 114th, Owen clocked a 30:33.5 for 119th and Timper finished 122nd at 31:29.0.

Just three Boyceville girls ran in the race. For the second straight year, sophomore Marissa Dormanen was the top finisher for the Bulldog girls. Dormanen was 45th after completing the 5,000 meter race in 27:14.6. Lauren Dominick was 51st in 27:35.3 and freshman Sarah Kapsner finished in 35:34.8 to take 93rd.

Boyceville will be in action this Thursday at St. Croix Central. After breaking for the Labor Day holiday, the Bulldogs will run in Fall Creek on September 12.
