GLENWOOD CITY — The Hilltoppers’ defense committed nine errors and their pitchers surrendered 11 hits including a home run and a pair of triples and doubles in a 12-2 home loss to the Colfax Vikings Thursday, May 21.
It was Glenwood City’s 15th loss in 16 games this season.
Colfax got to Toppers’ starter Joel Ormson early, tagging the junior hurler for a pair of triples and a run in the top of the first inning.
The Vikings added to their lead in the third with five runs highlighted by Sawyer DeMoe’s three run homer that extended the visitors’ lead to 6-0.
The Hilltoppers scored twice in the bottom half of the third off Colfax starter Sawyer DeMoe.
Nick Schone walked and scored on a Mitch Hurtgen single. Hurtgen in turn came around to score on a base hit by Jeff Schone.
But DeMoe would quickly regain control of the game as he struck out six and retired 11 of the final 13 Glenwood City batters he faced.
Nick Schone reached on a fourth inning single and Nic Jensen reach in the seventh on an error.
Meanwhile the Vikings continued to hit Ormson and his relief, Nick Schone and take advantage of errors to add more runs.
Colfax scored three times in the fourth on just one hit – a Jarrod Rudi double – and a pair of GC errors.
Then in the sixth, Colfax plated three more runs to take a ten rule lead as the Toppers committed four more errors in the inning.
DeMoe put out the Toppers in the bottom half of the sixth to bring an end to the contest.
DeMoe gave up three hits in the win and struck out ten Glenwood City batters. Ormson suffered the loss, giving up nine runs and five hits in three and two thirds innings. Nick Schone finished the final two and a third surrendering three runs on two hits.
Glenwood City, currently 1-11 in conference play, will conclude regular season action this week with a pair of road games. The Hilltoppers wrapped up their D-SC schedule in Plum City yesterday (May 26) and will travel to St. Croix Falls on Friday, May 29.
Glenwood City will open regional play next Tuesday, June 2. The Toppers are in regional C of the Division 3 Cumberland Sectional. Besides Glenwood City, other regional schools include Boyceville, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, Colfax, and Elk Mound.
