Toppers’ track teams compete in cold and rain

In less than ideal conditions, Glenwood City track and field teams competed in their final two regular season meets last week in preparation for the upcoming tournament series which began yesterday (Tuesday, May 19) with the Dunn-St. Croix Conference tournament at Colfax.

The Hilltoppers had also been in Colfax the previous Tuesday (May 12) to compete in the 23rd annual Colfax Vikings’ Invitational. Despite cool and at times windy weather, the Topper girls finished fourth overall in the 15-team tournament. The boys team was not quite as fortunate, as it took 12th.

The weather was even worse two days later, when Glenwood City hosted a quadrangular meet in a cold and steady rainfall on Thursday, May 14. Competing against Somerset, St. Croix Falls and Amery, both Glenwood City teams finished fourth.

Following the conference meet, Glenwood City will have a week to rest and prepare for the start of the WIAA tournament which will get underway Tuesday, May 26 with regional competitions. Glenwood City will compete in the Boyceville Division 3 Regional. The top four finishers in each event will advance to the sectional meet in Colfax on Friday, May 29.

Viking Invite

Solid individual and relay performances helped propel the Glenwood City girls to a strong fourth-place finish in the May 12 Colfax Vikings’ Track and Field Invitational. The Topper girls scored 66 points.

Junior Rachel Klatt led the effort for the Hilltoppers with their only event win – a victory in the shot put. Klatt also placed fifth in the discus.

Fellow junior Morgan Kadinger also garnered a pair of point gaining finishes, taking third in the 400 meters and fifth in the high jump.

Maya Petersen was fourth in the 100 meter high hurdles, Gabby Peterson placed fifth in the 100 meters, Jennifer Kopacz finished sixth, three spots behind Kadinger, in the 400 meters and freshman Mariah Voeltz also scored points in the 100 meter high hurdles with a seventh place showing.

The girls also finished well in all four relay events, taking a second in the 4 x 100 m, fourth in both the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 and fifth in the 4 x 200 m.

Just two boys – seniors Todd Petersen and Marcus Kadinger – were able to score points in individual events.

Petersen was third in the 110 meter high hurdles and seventh in the long jump while Kadinger came in fifth in the 400 meters.

Like the girls, all four of the boys relay team placed. The 4 x 800 m squad took fourth, the 4 x 100 m team was fifth, and the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 finished seventh and eighth respectively.

The Topper boys finished in 12th place with 29.5 points.

Colfax, the only team to top the 100 point mark, claimed both the boys and girls team titles.

Home Quad

Just as Glenwood City prepared to host their final meet of the regular season on May 14, rain began to fall. Although cold and wet conditions had forced the cancellation of Glenwood City’s first attempt home meet back on April 20, similar conditions last Thursday did not keep competitors off the track as the planned quadrangular meet with Somerset, Amery and St. Croix Falls proceeded despite the cold, steady rain that persisted throughout the meet.

Freshman Mariah Voeltz was credited with Glenwood City’s lone win in the dreary, damp conditions. Voeltz won the long jump with leap of 13’ 8.75”. She also place sixth in the 100 m high hurdles.

Rachel Klatt also earned a pair of places. The junior was the runner-up in the shot put and took fourth in the discus.

Kaitlin Konder finished second in the 3,200 meters just a few seconds and one spot ahead of teammate Makayla O’Brien.

Thirds were also earned by Morgan Kadinger in the high jump and Maya Petersen in the 100 m high hurdles. Gabby Peterson ran to a fourth-place finish in the 100 meters.

The Topper girls also scored second place in three of the relay events – 4 x 100, 4 x 4000 and 4 x 800 – and were third in the 4 x 200 m.

The boys also found success in the relays as the teams also scored a trio of second-place finishes – 4 x 100, 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 – and won the 4 x 200 m.

Todd Petersen continued to led the Glenwood City boys. The senior placed in three events on the home track as he scored second place in both the long and triple jumps and was third in the 110 meter high hurdles.

Freshman Ethan Kahler scored a pair of fifth-place finishes in the long jump and 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Fellow classmate Riley Schutz took third in the 1,600 meter run.

Senior Marcus Kadinger finished fourth in the 400 meters and freshman Jacob Nelson was fifth in the 200 meters.

St. Croix Falls won the girls competition with 174 points while Somerset topped the boys race with 161 points. Both Toppers’ teams finished fourth with the girls collecting 83 points and the boys 72 points.
