COLFAX — Seniors Jake Hierlmeier and Bill Norenberg helped pace Glenwood City to a third-place showing in the Dunn-St. Croix conference’s 2015 golf opener at Whitetail Golf Course near Colfax on Monday, April 13.
Hierlmeier shot a 38 in the nine-hole meet to lead the Hilltoppers’ varsity squad and finished second in the individual standings while Norenberg carded a 44 in his first varsity meet.
Glenwood City, who won all nine conference meets a year ago, tallied a team score of 173 Monday at Whitetail to finish 11 shots behind winner Spring Valley (162) and five off runner-up Mondovi (168). St. Croix Central finished fourth with 191 points followed by Elk Mound with 213 and Colfax at 219.
Freshman Tyler Leach led the Cardinals to victory with a top individual score of 37 and took medalist honors by one shot over Hierlmeier. Spring Valley also had two other golfers – Jason Richardson and Jordan Jensen, who both shot 39 – finish in the top five.
“Jake had a very nice meet to finish with a 38,” said Ron Johnson, Glenwood City head coach. “And Bill Norenberg got a nice 44 in his first varsity meet.”
The Toppers’ three other varsity linksters also tallied scores in the 40s. Nathan Mrdutt shot a 45, Garret Schemionek scored a 46 and freshman Collin Schone finished with a 48.
Despite the aid and warmth of a clear and bright spring sky, winds did hamper golf games.
“We kind of struggled in the windy conditions at Colfax,” noted Johnson following the team’s third-place finish.
“But it’s still early in the year, so we can work on the areas of the game that we are having problems with,” concluded Johnson. “So when conference, regionals, and sectionals get here, we are playing our best golf.”
