SPRING VALLEY — After having to wait a couple of extra days, the Glenwood City golf team teed off on the 2015 season in Spring Valley last Saturday.
The Hilltoppers, led by defending conference medalist and senior Jake Hierlmeier’s 18-hole score of 86, finished fourth in the 10-team Spring Valley Golf Invitational held Saturday, April 11.
The Toppers’ team tally of 376 was 10 shots behind third-place finisher Ellsworth and a hefty 43 strokes off the winning total set by Somerset, who had a low score of 333.
Host Spring Valley took second-place honors as two of its golfers finished in the top three including tournament medalist Tyler Leach. The Spring Valley freshman phenom shot a 71 to birdie the course owned by his parents.
Hierlmeier’s 86 put him in ninth place in the individual tournament standings while junior Nathan Mrdutt finished in a two-way tie for 11th with a score of 89.
Garret Schemionek shot 100, Bill Norenberg 101 and Collin Schone scored 108 to round out Glenwood City’s varsity five.
Three of the Hilltoppers golfers were able to better their scores in the back nine.
Garret Schemionek improved six strokes, going for a score of 53 on the front nine holes to a 47 over the final nine. Mrdutt shaved three strokes off his front-nine score of 46 to card a 43 on the final half of the course. Bill Norenberg had one stroke less on the back nine – 51 compared to a 50.
The Hilltoppers had a conference meet in Colfax Monday and again this Thursday before traveling to Bristol Ridge Golf Course near Somerset on Saturday, April 18.
The Hilltoppers’ home opener is next Monday, April 20 when the other five conference schools for a D-SC meet at Glen Hills Golf Course.
The GC junior varsity also competed at Spring Valley finishing with a 461. Matt Wink, 106; Brandon Barstad and Nathan Hill, 109; Jake Hennessy 137; and John Garland 175.
