Boyceville HS Science Olympiad finishes 19th, MS 25th overall at Wright State Invite in Dayton, Ohio

DAYTON, OH – The Boyceville MS & HS Science Olympiad teams participated this past weekend in the Wright State University Science Olympiad Invitational in Dayton, OH with the high school varsity team finishing 18th out of 42 teams (JV finishing 29th) and the middle school team finishing in 25th place overall (JV finishing 46th) out of 50 teams.

Eleven different states were represented at this tournament, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, and the defending national champion team from Beckendorff MS (TX) was also in attendance. Other historically strong teams who participated included Centerville (OH), Solon (OH), Liberal Arts and Science Academy (TX), Munster HS (IN), Northville MS & HS (MI), Kellenberg Memorial HS (NY), Marie Murphy MS (IL), Whiting (IN), Russell Independent (KY), Beardon MS (TN), Mentor (OH), Springhouse MS (PA), Shady Side Academy (PA), and Saline HS (MI).

The team departed by coach bus for Dayton, Ohio on Thursday evening, and the bus traveled through the night before arriving at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH on Friday morning. Friday was spent touring Ohio Stadium including the football stadium, band facilities, and the field and press box facilities, as well as touring Wright State University in preparation for competition on Saturday.

Earning tournament championship gold medals at this prestigious tournament were junior Wyatt Swenson and sophomore Max Engel in Wright Stuff. Juniors Luke Timper and Marshall earned a silver medal in It’s About Time and Marshall and Engel in Scrambler. Sixth place finishes were recorded by Swenson and Luke Timper in Technical Problem Solving and sophomores Kiel Anderson and Michael Chich in Bungee Drop, while an eighth place finish was earned by seniors Hannah Jerrie and Nolan Windsor in Forensic Science.

In the middle school division, fourth place ribbons were earned by ninth grader Casey Owen and seventh grader Emma Bygd in Bottle Rockets, sixth place ribbons were earned by Owen and sixth grader Nathan Corr in Elastic Launch Glider as well as Corr and ninth grader Luke Knudtson in Wheeled Vehicle, and an eighth place ribbon was earned by seventh graders Ana Evenson and Tyra Kostman in Write It, Do It.

Boyceville MS is back in competition at the regional tournament it hosts on February 21st, while Boyceville HS goes to regionals at Menomonie HS on March 7th.
