BOYCEVILLE — After leading the pack for the first two miles, Shiann Wagner finished inside the top five at the Sectional cross country meet last Saturday, which advanced her to the State meet.
She is the first Lady Bulldog to make a State appearance since Allison Loggston in 2006.
Wagner is the lone Bulldogs competing at State this year. She has been leading the Bulldogs around the course this season, which is an impressive feat for a freshman.
Out of 91 total runners, Shiann placed sixth overall, but eliminating Glenwood City and Fall Creek from the mix since they advanced as a team, put her in third.
She ran a 21:11.4 behind Emily Jaeger of Fall Creek who finished with a 20:36.2 for first.
The Lady Bulldogs did not field a team, but Marissa Dormanen and Brooklyn Booth did run the 5K race as well.
Dormanen placed 32nd with a time of 23:00.3 and Booth finished 58th with a 25:01.7.
The boys did field a team and their seven runners placed eighth out of 16 with a score of 200. McDonell Central finished first with a 68 and Immanuel Lutheran was second with an 86.
Mitch Pustol crossed the finish line first for the team with a 17:50.1, which put him in tenth overall out of 118.
As a senior, he finished the race and his high school cross country career with a personal best time.
He was two places shy of advancing to State as an individual. First place overall went to Aidan Manley of Spring Valley with a time of 16:53.0.
Coming in second for the team and 37th overall was Max Engel with a 19:24.4. Following him was Sam Retz in 48th with a 19:47.1.
In fourth, fifth and sixth for the Bulldogs and 52nd, 53rd, and 54th overall was Jerod Nelson, Jack Kapsner and Rian Corr. Jerod and Jack finished side by side with a 19:54.6 for both and then Rian followed with a 19:56.3.
Rounding out the team was Kiel Anderson in 63rd with a 20:17.2.
Shiann will compete this Saturday, November 1 in the Division 3 race that is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. The meet will be held at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
