The Hilltopper volleyball team was in Boyceville last Tuesday for their first conference contest of the season, which ended in a three set loss.
Two days later they were at home on Thursday for a homecoming game against Colfax, which ended in another three set loss for a season start of 0-2.
Against the Bulldogs, the Toppers took a loss, but they managed to improve with each set as the final scores were 25-12, 25-17 and 25-19.
As a team they finished with a total of 23 digs, 10 kills and three service aces.
Mikaela Voeltz played her usual back row position and collected 11 of the 23 digs and she had three kills as well.
Leading in kills was Megan Samens with four and then Leslie Ludtke had two and Hannah Ludtke had one. The Ludtke sisters were also responsible for the three service aces the team had.
On Thursday, the Vikings started slow which gave the Toppers a slight advantage the first set. The score was 3-0 and then 7-4 before it tied at 10’s and the momentum shifted.
For the Vikings, Lakken Meredith played setter and Chey Olson was the middle attacker and the two were a serious force to be reckoned with.
Meredith pushed up low sets for Olson and she pounded the ball with such force the Toppers were nearly ducking the ball.
This momentum created a monster on the Viking’s side and from there on they tore up the court with final scores of 25-16, 25-8 and 25-7.
The Toppers finished the night with eight kills, three services aces and a total of 15 digs.
The kills came from Hannah, Carlee Strong, Samens and Jenesa Klinger with each of them landing two a piece.
Leslie was a strong server in the first set for the Toppers, which put three additional service aces on her record for the year.
Following that the Toppers were in Elk Mound on Tuesday, September 23. They will be at home this Thursday then for Parents’ Night with their match scheduled against Elmwood/Plum City at 7:00 p.m.
