Bertha Wienke celebrates 100th birthday on July 28

Bertha Wienke celebrated her 100th birthday on July 28. Wienke, currently a resident of Golden Age Manor, was born in Forest.

Bertha married Harvey Wienke on June 15, 1932 in Forest. The couple had three children: Ervin, Janet and Gaylord. Ervin was killed by a hit and run driver in 1946 when he was eight and Gaylord died in a motorcycle accident in 1965 when he was 19.

Wienke worked for Doughboy Plastic in New Richmond from 1949 to 1957 and tended bar in Forest for three years. Bertha also worked as a waitress at the Midway Café in Glenwood City from 1964 to 1975.

The Wienkes sold their home in Forest and moved to Amery in 1975. Bertha worked in the kitchen at Crestview Nursing Home (now Willow Ridge) until 1984.

The Wienkes sold their home in 1987 and moved into Water’s Edge Apartments. Harvey passed away in 1993. Bertha has been a resident of Golden Age Manor since 2012.
