Golf team finishing two places short of qualifying for state; Hierlmeier advances as individual

CHIPPEWA FALLS – The Glenwood City golf team’s hot winning streak came to an end in the tough Sectional meet after they placed fourth on the Lake Wissota Golf Course last Tuesday, June 3.

Only the top two teams that place at the Sectional move onto the state meet and the Hilltoppers came in fourth with a team score of 343.

Cadott was third with a 331, Eleva-Strum was second with 329 and McDonell Central was first with a 318.

Despite the team itself not making the cut, Jake Hierlmeier is advancing however as an individual after shooting a 78 on the par 71, 18-hole course.

He finished in a three way tie for fourth place against Josh McIlquham of McDonell Central and Jordan Knutson of Grantsburg. The top spot went to Thomas Longbella of McDonell who shot a 70.

Jake started the day off strong with the first four holes at par. He then bogeyed five, parred six, bogeyed seven and eight and finished with a par four on nine.

He started the back nine with a birdie on hole ten. He then bogeyed 11 and 12 before shooting his first par on 13.

He continued with a par on 14 and then bogeyed 15 and 16 before shooting two strokes on 17 for a birdie. He finished with a double bogey on hole 18.

Nathan Mrdutt followed with the second lowest score for the Toppers. He had an 87 with a first round of 45 and a second of 42.

He was three over on hole one and then bogeyed two before finishing even on hole three. He then bogeyed holes four through seven before finishing with a par on eight and a bogey on nine.

His back nine started with a double bogey on ten and then he went par on holes 11 through 14. He shot bogey on 15, 16 an 17 and the finished up with a double bogey on 18.

Older brother, Nick was one stroke behind Nathan with an 88 after shooting a 48 on the first nine and then a 40 on the back.

Nick had a rough start to the day with a double bogey on hole one, a bogey on two and then he went four strokes over on hole three before finally shooting par on four. Hole five was a bogey and six and seven were par. His final two holes were one stroke over.

He seemed to recollect himself and find his groove in the back nine with a par shot on holes ten and 11. He double bogeyed 12, but recovered with par on holes 13, 14 and 15. He finished with a bogey on the last three holes.

Garrett Schemionek was fourth for the team with a total of 90 after hitting a 48 on the front nine and then a 42 on the back.

He went bogey on hole one, birdie on two, three over on three and double bogey on four and five before bogeying six and seven. He finished with a double bogey on eight and a bogey on nine.

On the last nine, he hit a par four on hole ten then bogeyed 11 and 12 before going par again on 13. He then bogeyed 14, was par on 15, double bogeyed 16, was par on 17 and then finished two over on 18.

Jordan Hill came in as the fifth golfer for the team with a total of 115 after a 60 on the front nine and then a 55 on the back.

He was three over on the first three holes. He shot par on hole four, then double bogeyed five before going four over on holes six, seven and eight He finished with a bogey on hole nine.

On ten, Jordan shot five over on the par four hole. He then double bogeyed 11 and 12 before shooting par on 13. He went three over on 14, then double bogeyed 15, was three over on 16 and then again shot a double bogey on 17 before finishing the day one over on 18.

The State meet was held this past Monday and Tuesday (June 9-10) at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
