Glenwood City’s 2014 graduates awarded $109,100 in scholarships

GLENWOOD CITY – Several graduates of Glenwood City’s Class of 2014 will share in a scholarship haul that once again tallied in the six figures.

Nearly 60 percent of this year’s graduating class of 38 members earned scholarship awards from private, public, and local courses. Although this year’s awards total was down nearly $78,000 from 2013, 22 individuals still earned an impressive, combined tally of $109,100 in monetary awards.

Much like a year ago, almost half of that total was earned by one graduate – class salutatorian and honor student Katelyn Meyers. It was announced at commencement exercises Saturday morning, May 31 that Meyers had received a half dozen different scholarships that totaled $54,450. The largest amount came from her chosen school, Drake University, which awarded her a $13,000 Presidential Scholarship that is renewable yearly for up to four years. She also received a $1,000 Russell Meyer Scholarship, a $500 Miss Glenwood City Scholarship, a $500 Glen Hills Lions Club Scholarship, the $250 George Johnston Memorial Scholarship, and a $200 Glenwood City Basketball Club Scholarship.

Class valedictorian McKenzie Kruse-Pillsbury received the second largest sum, collecting $13,450 from eight awards. The largest, the State of Wisconsin’s Academic Excellence Scholarship, is valued at $2,250 per year for four years. McKenzie also received a $1,500 Vietnam Veterans Association 331 Scholarship valued at $1,500 as well as a Russel Meyer Scholarship for $1,000.

Honor student, Ryan Curtis, earned the class’ third largest award tally. Curtis secured four awards for a total of $6,500 – all from UW-Stout. They included a $3,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship, a $2,000 Honors College Scholarship, and a $1,000 Polytechnic Scholarship.

Two other honor students each garnered more than $4,000 in awards.

Jenna Magsam earned $4,750 in scholarships awards. The largest of the nine awards was a $1,250 Built Ford Tough National FFA Scholarship.

Donovan Fornal, the class president, secured $4,300 in awards including a $2,000 AnnMarie Foundation Scholarship.

Both Fornal and Magsam received $1,000 Russell Meyer Scholarships.

The Russell Meyer Scholarship fund awarded ten scholarships this year, each valued at $1,000.
